India pledges US$5 billion for Africa development. As host to this year's Africa-India Forum
summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh announced the funds,
available as low-interest loans, will be made available to assist in Africa's infrastructure,
information technology and higher education, among other areas. India is also gifting US$2
million for peace and security work of the African Union Mission in Somalia. Prime Minister
Singh said that India's support for the continent comes in part from a feeling of solidarity
with her efforts to transcend such areas as poverty by being able to provide food security,
education and health care. He stated. “India will work with Africa to realize its vast
potential.”
Our sincere appreciation, Your Excellency and India, for your generous commitment and
support for economic growth and increased cooperation in Africa. May nations on every
continent work together to further prosperity and friendship among all the world’s citizens
