Rain returns to the Bay Area! Thanks for taking the time to tune into the National Weather
Service’s briefing on a series of upcoming storms in the Bay Area. I’m Logan Johnson.
Our first storm will begin late this evening and go through Thursday afternoon. Rain will
begin in the North Bay this evening and spread south through the Bay Area and into the Monterey
Bay area overnight. By sunrise on Thursday rain will have already overspread the entire
area and will fall heavily at times during the morning commute. Here are expected rainfall
totals for this event. A half to three quarters of an inch of rain is expected in the major
urban areas around San Francisco Bay. Heaviest rain will be in the west facing coastal mountain
ranges – where rain of 1 to 1 and a half inches will fall! This is a very beneficial
rainfall for the area. The primary safety impacts from this rain
tonight and Thursday will be on the morning commute. Rain will bring slippery and wet
roadways, and hazardous driving conditions in the major traveled roadways of the Bay
Area. Use caution on your morning drive, allow extra time if you can and slow down.
While our first concerns will be with the storm tonight and Thursday, a second storm
this weekend is expected to be more significant. While its too early to fine tune the details,
there will be periods of heavy rain this weekend and this will bring concerns for urban flooding,
with clogged storm drains contributing to this problem. In addition, reduced visibiltiy
and heavy rain will create hazardous driving conditions this weekend, and increased travel
times can be expected! Use caution and slow down this weekend.
Total rainfall amounts from both storms are depicted here. The San Francisco/San Jose/Oakland
metro areas around the bay can expect rain of 2 inches or more from the series of storms!
This amount of rain could possibly be more rain than has happened this entire winter
season so far. The heaviest totals will occur in the North Bay where rain over 3 inches
is expected, and even 6 to 7 inches or more in the west facing slopes of the mountains
there! This will make a dent in drought conditions in the North Bay and end any remaining fire
concerns. Thank you for tuning in to our weather briefing.
