Hi, I'm Laura from youngwritersworkshops.com and I'm going to talk about when do you use
a hyphen. A hyphen is used to divide a word. Now it could be a word that when you reach
the end of the line, you don't have room so you divide it and in that case it would be
divided between syllables. Never divide a one syllable word. So that's one way to use
it. You can also use it in compound word such as air-conditioner or some word that's a compound
word the combination of two words but connected with a hyphen. It's also used between numbers
in a fraction. So if you write the word one-fourth in words instead of expressing it in numbers
you'll want to have a hyphen between one and fourth. It can also be used to join letters
and words. So for example, x-ray or g-rated, you use a hyphen to connect the letter to
the word. So those are some ways that you can use a hyphen.
