The winner of the Industry Collaboration
Award 2012 is Minerals Council
of Australia, Northern Territory division. The partnership is between
industry and ourselves as a training provider to improve the training
outcomes in a pre-employment environment for Aboriginal people
so it's been a great partnership for us, it's not only us and the Minerals Council
it also involves several Government agencies, Central Land Council, Northern
Land Council, other training providers so it is true collaboration
and that's how we get the best student outcomes. The Minerals Council of
Australia became involved initially when a former CEO recognised
the fact that Indigenous employment in the mining industry in the Territory had wained quite
considerably so we decided to form a team.
We formed a committee to look at Indigenous employment in the Territory
We worked on peoples life skills, their self-esteem, their confidence,
understanding what the barriers were to employment. What we perceive, what
were real. Developing leadership, teamwork. Obviously
a heavy focus on literacy and numeracy so that people could go into the workplace with confidence
because we're talking about a lot of people that have not had previously a lot of engagement
in education and employment. We did a lot of hard work and the ground work to ensure that
we looked after the trainees while they're in the program, developed the resources
and the training around them and the outcomes have been acknowledged tonight.
It's fantastic. It's such a treasure to be part of this program and the support
that Chris has provided has been relentless and he's been the driving force behind the whole initiative.
