Hi, my name is Griff Smith, Photo Editor with Texas Highways magazine. Today we're in downtown
Fort Worth at the Riata Restaurant, and I'm gonna talk about how to use a reflector.
The purpose of using a reflector is to soften the light and make it spread onto the subject
that we're photographing. You can buy a reflector.
You can also use things around you. You can use a white shirt, you can use a napkin.
You can use a menu, you can even use foil. Anything that will reflect light can be used
as a reflector. When using a dedicated flash with a reflector,
you must make sure that the sensor on the flash is pointed at the subject - in this
case, the food. I had to turn the head of the flash around
where it was facing the reflector, and the sensor was facing the food.
In this particular photo, I decided to use a reflector to soften the shadows on the food.
This way I could get more detail coming out of shadows than I normally would if the light
was directly the food. If there are any other areas of photography
you would like to learn about, please send your suggestions to TexasHighways.com.
