What follows is the presentation made at the awards ceremony about one of the 2013 award
winners. Christy McAvoy
This award acknowledges Christy McAvoy’s more than 30 years of volunteer and professional
contributions to historic preservation in California and beyond.
Christy has made historic preservation the centerpiece of her professional life.
In 1989, she co-founded Historic Resources Group, a consulting firm providing quality
preservation services to public, non-profit and private sector clients.
Following the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, she was appointed as acting State Historic
Preservation Officer in southern California, helping to coordinate local, state, and FEMA
recovery efforts. Christy also played a major role in many award-winning
rehabilitation projects throughout Los Angeles County, including among others, the Los Angeles
Memorial Coliseum, the Annenberg Community Beach House, Hangar One at LAX, and St. Andrews
Bungalow Courts. She served on the faculty and in the development
of the USC Summer Program for Historic Preservation, and the Graduate degree program in preservation
at the USC School of Architecture. Christy has been no less committed to historic
preservation on the volunteer front. At the national level, she remains an Advisor
Emeritus of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. At the state and local levels,
Christy served as board member and president for both the California Preservation Foundation
and the Los Angeles Conservancy. Volunteer projects included advising Los Angeles’
Downtown Women’s Center in the adaptive reuse of a 1927 shoe factory building into
sustainable supportive housing for women on Los Angeles’ Skid Row.
The project received a National Trust Honor Award.
Christy McAvoy’s many good works have earned her numerous awards, and the lasting respect
of colleagues, friends, family, and the public. She is a bright star within the historic preservation
community of California. Congratulations to all the winners of the
