Hi. My name is Michele Bastos and I am a dancer, a choreographer and teacher in New York City.
I am from Salvador Bahia, Brazil and I started dancing at a very young age.
Coming from a family of musicians and dancers, music was always present in the house. At
different occasions my brothers and his friends would get together and do jam sessions in
the house. They would compose songs that they would perform and do in Carnival. Most of
the songs became legendary Carnival hits.
I have performed with major Brazilian bands such as Banda Mel, Banda (?), Banda Teja Samba,
Banda (?), the queen of Axe music Daniela Mercury and here in America have performed
with Pharrell Williams, Jay-Z, and the Gipsy Kings who I love, among others.
I have a dance degree from Federal University of Bahia and right after graduating from college
I won a scholarship with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
Today, I am a Pilates education specialist. I work with Crunch Fitness as the National
Pilates Director and I own my own dance group in which I direct and choreograph. I teach
Afro-Brazilian dance, Orishas and Samba classes and workshops in different universities in
the USA and around the globe.
So today we are going to learn a little bit about Samba and how to do the basic Samba
steps. You are going to learn different aspects from what to wear, what type of shoes to wear
and what type of Samba party you want to go to. Are you ready?
