Who is familiar with the fight or flight syndrome?
One or two of you, all of you, probably,
The thing with fight or flight is it's, um, we'll it's not particularly helpful these days is it?
because there's not an awful lot, well there are some grizzly bears, none in Whitley Bay,
I live in Whitley Bay by the way, I can't speak for Newcastle but there's none in Whitley Bay
so this isn't going to happen to me on the way home, probably,
however there are situations where you can feel really anxious and nervous and your body's biological reaction to that is to kick in,
is to fight or flight syndrome and there are ways that you can deal with that
Now if you need to come across as confident to an audience, If you want your body language to say,
look, you're in good hands, don't start crying, don't run away, we are going to do something really good here, you know,
we're going to share something and it's going to be fantastic
If you want your body language to say that it would help if you felt like that inside wouldn't it?
because if you don't feel like that at all it's going to, you're going to send a different message,
a different incongruent message I am saying it's going to be great guys, but my body language is going,
run for the hills, it's not happening tonight
so it's, fight or flight is, something that will happen to you regardless when you feel nervous,
There are ways though of removing the unhelpful side effects of that nervousness without actually losing your edge
I think that's, one of the things I often say is, people say to me, I wish I could just be dead chilled,
I wish I could just be really not bothered, truth is you don't really want that,
'cause if you were completely chilled like you'd had four *** before you stood up you'd lose your edge,
you know, you wouldn't make an impact nearly as well as you would if you were, had something about you, bit of an edge about you,
if I am excited and passionate about what I'm trying to tell you, and I am,
I hope that's what comes across, in my body language, so that's where I want to be,
I want to be, not debilitated by nerves to the point where I am frightened to do anything, but I want to be, still have that edge,
And, one of the things you can do is you can help yourself with a breathing technique that I use sometimes
it's nothing particularly clever, It's just if you breathe in, or what was it? a friend of mine,
a doctor friend of mine, told me that when you,
I didn't know this till recently,
that when you breathe in, the physical act of breathing in creates a chemical to be produced in the brain,
I can't remember the name of it, and that chemical, when you breathe in, it actually creates a bit of a nervousness,
an anxiousness within you, In your blood, and it goes everywhere,
but when you breathe, when you're physically breathing out, it creates, it stops that chemical and creates a different one
that calms you down, makes you very relaxed
So he said all you have to do is breathe out more than you believe in,
and I went, how can you breathe out more than you breathe in?
and he said, no, breathe in really quickly and breathe out really slowly, because if you spend more time breathing out
and less time breathing in then you can actually address the balance
He said that the erm, he's Indian, that the famous Indian singers in his country have a tendency to out live everybody else
and they put it down to this, the amount of time they spend,
'cause they sing a certain type of way and they spend a lot of time breathing out and a lot less time breathing in
and I just thought that was fascinating
So I tried it, and, so I breathed in fairly quickly, don't want to hyper ventilate and pass out, but I breathe in fairly quickly
and spend as long as I can breathing out, I do that about 10 times,
It doesn't take long, but it really is, I did it once on a long journey, I thought, I'll do 100 breaths,
you know, it took about an hour and a half, seriously, I took a long time breathing out, but by the time I'd finished
I went way beyond relaxed, I was like, literally, like I had a few ***, it was almost like hypnotic it's the most relaxed I've ever been,
and I suggest you try it because erm, I find it very useful
Don't start crying, you're in good hands,
run for the hills, it's not happening tonight.
