SALLY: There's so much weird and unusual stuff here.
Do you guys even know what you're looking at?
I'll splurge -- $20.
I think that it's gonna be a fight at this auction.
Come on, Billy.
What is your big idea that's gonna get us in this?
I have a solution that will not fail.
Oh, my God! Aah!
Don't mess with New York City, suckah!
NARRATOR: Every day, $40 billion in property
travels around the world.
1% of that gets lost or left behind.
When this property goes unclaimed,
it's put up for public auction.
Yo!
AUCTIONEER: Sold!
SALLY: We're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars.
NARRATOR: This is "Baggage Battles."
AUCTIONEER: Sold!
SALLY: You don't know this yet.
Jacksonville is named after Andrew Jackson,
whose face is on the 20-dollar bill.
So, in Jacksonville, we could hit the jackpot!
How much money you want to spend this time?
As much as it takes to buy what I want.
MARK: Jacksonville's one of the biggest cities in the country,
and I'm hoping that this auction is larger than life.
I don't know if I'm gonna go home
with a box of toy motorcycles or an actual motorcycle.
BILLY: You know what?
People dream about retiring to Florida.
Not me.
There's swamps everywhere.
I like gators.
I'm kind of like a gator myself.
I slither into an auction, I'm stealth, and I snap!
This Southern auction's a lot different than other auctions.
There's a lot of great stuff --
Americana, tools, the Hulk, Mike Tyson.
Oh, these are fantastic.
I've never had a Mike Tyson.
You can mess around with him.
Throw the jab, a right, and then hu-poh!
[ Cuckoo-clock whistling, dinging ]
Don't mess with New York City, suckah!
I told you not to mess with me!
SALLY: There's so much weird and unusual stuff here.
We really don't even know where to start.
Here you go, honey.
There is this slate-gray safe.
Oh, wait. Listen to it.
[ Rattling ]
Emeralds... pearls, rubies.
Could it be jewels?
Right now, the $64 million question is,
how much should we pay for this thing?
It really is a gamble,
and we don't even know if we can get in it.
So, what are you gonna bid on it?
If it's valuable,
I would think $250 pretty easily on something like that.
Yeah, well, that would be a fair bet.
Bye. See you later.
[ Laughing ]
[ Loud rattling ]
Sounds like tools.
There's a lot of toolboxes at this auction.
There's one box that totally stands out.
It's a black, wooden box.
What I like about it is its length.
Size does matter.
The bigger the better.
I want this black wooden box.
LAURENCE: Sally and myself,
we'd like to look for something different.
Rrrrr!
Do you guys even know what you're looking at?
No.
I like it.
[ Blows ]
All old sealed boxed.
I have a secret.
I love sealed boxes.
This one here is amazing.
It's at least a 100-year-old box.
I'll go anywhere from 150 to 300 bucks
because it has the weight and it has the look.
My wallet is set on this black box.
MARK: Everything at this auction seems to be supersize.
They're not selling one piece. They're selling an entire table.
BILLY: Look. The shutters work.
MARK: I'm looking at this giant Mike Tyson,
and I feel emotional about it.
That means I have to buy it.
There's nothing that causes more fender benders
than some awesome stuff outside your store.
If I'm able to buy this for 500 bucks,
I think it's a great play.
There's gonna be a big fight over Mike Tyson.
I think he's gonna be proud.
It's close.
LAURENCE: There's several boxes at this auction.
SALLY: We look at these boxes,
and this one is marked "master closet."
Well, what do you put in your closet?
You put clothes, but you also put your good stuff.
It only makes sense to me
that something good is gonna be in the "master closet" box.
So, it could be...
Clothing.
Whatever's in there, there could be something
inside the middle of what's in there.
You know what?
It looks good, it's big, it's heavy, it's ours.
Yeah! Okay. We're grabbing it.
BILLY: This auction has a great feeling.
Maybe it's just the good old Southern hospitality.
The place is completely packed.
It's all locals, all local dealers.
I know I'm gonna win.
AUCTIONEER: All right, guys, first item up, first item up.
You're buying a naval shutter lamp.
The U.S. Navy signal shutter light
is really, really, really cool.
I might get lucky and get it for $150.
Start me out -- $75 on the naval shutter lamp.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
Military stuff can be worth a lot of money.
It still can be reused today.
Last call, $150. $175.
If I win it, I'm really gonna feel like a thief.
Yeah!
BILLY: If this signal light is from the 19th century,
you got a small retirement fund there.
$25, $50.
They have toolboxes sealed up at this auction.
We start bidding on this one,
and I'm hoping to get it for a steal.
$100!
AUCTIONEER: $110, $110, $110, $110.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
MARK: The bidding gets heated over this box.
Sold, $120.
I hadn't seen that number much tonight -- 22.
MARK: I think I got it for a great price.
The challenge now is finding a buyer.
All right, guys, you're buying this safe.
We do not have a key or combination.
The safe comes up on the auction block.
Mr. Mark over there, he's interested, as well.
But we want the safe.
MARK: Inside this safe could be gold coins,
jewelry, watches.
Mark decides that it's his goal in life
to make us pay through the nose for the safe, and he does.
I had $300.
I want this safe, but it has to be at the right price.
AUCTIONEER: $300, $325.
Sell it!
$300, now $325. $300, $325.
SALLY: Thank goodness Mark falls out at $300.
Sold, $300.
All right!
SALLY: $300 is a lot of money.
Now, the question is, what is in the safe?
Lot number 51, guys.
I truly do not know what's in it.
I'll splurge -- $20.
Guys, he's buying hot dogs for the front row.
BILLY: This black, simple carpenter's box
has got my attention, and I want it.
$75, $100.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
In my professional opinion, this box is awesome.
BILLY: There's something good inside this box.
MARK: I'm hoping to get this black box for a steal,
and now Billy's after it.
Little Marky is pushing the price up.
Thorn in my side.
Sell it!
BILLY: My max is $300.
I am not going over my limit.
$300.
AUCTIONEER: Anybody else?! Anybody else?!
Sold, $250, to number 77.
BILLY: I'm happy.
For $250, there better be something really good inside.
All right, you're buying a box. It's an unopened box.
There's a box that says "master closet" on it.
What do I love about this box? Everything.
"Master closet" means wealth, period.
Unopened box -- start me out. How much? $50.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
SALLY: Mark is bidding against us on everything.
What is going on?
Yeehoo!
I absolutely have to own this box.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
I'm out.
Sold, $275, bidder number 33.
$275, bidder number 33.
We just scored huge.
There better be more than Kyle's slippers.
That's for sure.
Guys, lot number 5.
You're buying Mike Tyson, lot number 5.
Be careful now.
He may do a little nibblin' on you.
50 bucks!
Mike Tyson is gonna bring a premium at this auction.
I think that it's gonna be a fight to win him.
[ Auctioneer calling ]
BILLY: I want to take Mike Tyson home with me.
I'm gonna fight Mark for this statue.
MARK: There's not many things that move me,
but Mike Tyson is one of them.
Last call.
BILLY: 400 bucks? I'm down and out.
No mas.
Come on, Mark!
Mark! Mark! Mark! Mark! Mark!
Let's go, Mark!
But it's my money!
MARK: I'm gonna lose Mike Tyson
to Joe Schmoe and his band of cronies.
In the back row, they're bringing a big bank.
Come on, Mark!
Mark! Mark! Mark! Mark! Mark!
Let's go, Mark!
But it's my money!
Go, Mark!
AUCTIONEER: $450, last call.
MARK: I'm either walking out of here with Tyson
or out on a stretcher.
$450, last call. $500.
MARK: My competition -- He loves this piece.
I don't know if I'm gonna see this through.
AUCTIONEER: $550.
Let's go.
And...
Sold, $525.
You got it, bidder number 22.
Yeah.
Mark overpaid.
Wait till he remembers what the shipping costs are.
Thanks, Mark.
Thank you.
MARK: I think I did great at this auction.
I got Mike Tyson for a steal at $525 and some great pieces.
I bought a wooden box for $120.
I open it up...
[ Sighs ]
Quite anticlimactic.
There's six hammers, a box of nails, and two brushes.
These toolboxes are hit or miss.
And I missed.
Pbht!
[ Bell dings ]
All I got left in my corner is Mike Tyson,
and I don't know if that's good or bad.
Black shoes, black trunks, red gloves --
very traditional Iron Mike.
This has no practical purpose in life except one --
to look great.
I got to be honest --
I don't know how big the market is
on Mike Tyson life-size figures.
I have to take it to a sports collector
because that is the best shot that I got
at finding out how much Mike Tyson is really worth.
When I roll the six-foot boxer into Martin's store,
he flips out.
Wow.
That tells me it's worth some money.
So, Martin, I picked this up at a local auction.
Could you tell me really what I got?
Sure. This looks like, you know, potentially a movie prop
or something that would be used in a restaurant.
This could potentially be, like, a one-of-a-kind.
One-of-a-kind is usually an awesome thing.
How big is the Mike Tyson market?
Well, you know, in the late '80s, early '90s
when Mike was at his height, it was unbelievable.
Then, well-documented,
Mike had a really hard go there for a while.
At that point, his stuff really bottomed out.
Mike Tyson's past has hurt the value, and I'm getting worried.
My pocket could be dwindling.
So, in terms of condition, I've never seen one before.
I don't know how to compare them.
Is this in good shape?
Yeah, I mean, it looks like it's in great shape.
There's some general little wear and tear on it,
but nothing detrimental.
A glove's not broken off or a leg's not broken off
or anything like that.
If you put this in your glass window,
what would be the digit that you'd put on this?
Maybe I'm gonna have a real tough time selling this.
I think I'd put...
I don't know, maybe $1,500, $2,000, something like that.
2,000 bucks?
That's what I'm talking about.
I'm leaving Jacksonville with a profit and a new friend.
Who's the champ now? Hoo-hoo!
SALLY: We spent about $600 at the auction.
We got to find out what's in these items.
[ Speaking gibberish ] Look at this.
Honey, we spent $300 on this.
We bought the safe, we have it here, we have no key.
It's pretty safe, then, isn't it?
Well, what do you think we can do to get in it?
You can say the magic words -- open sesame --
but that never works.
What is your big idea that's gonna get us in this?
Just follow me, okay?
All right.
I have a solution that I feel will not fail.
Are you sure this is what you want to do?
Honey, I'm gonna just try and ride over it,
see if I can just put enough pressure on it
to pop it open, okay?
You catch all the jewels that fly out.
All right, here we go.
I don't think you're gonna be able to do it.
Say "Open Laurence Me!"
Oh, my God! Aah!
[ Horn honks ]
LAURENCE: We have the safe.
What we need to do is open it.
I have a solution that I feel will not fail.
Are you sure this is what you want to do?
Don't hit me.
[ Engine revs ]
Say "Open Laurence Me!"
[Bleep]
[ Tires screech ]
[ Laughing ]
Good bit of driving it, eh?
We crack it, honey?
Yeah, it doesn't look very good.
It's toasted.
It's just gravel.
Present for you.
Yeah, it's all corroded.
[ Gasps ] Oh, look!
I love this!
We have a charm bracelet, we have earrings.
More charms.
Sterling silver.
We have an old Tag watch.
It's our little mini Aladdin's treasure that we found.
I told you we're coming to this auction to get some bullion,
and then we got it.
Right.
I bet we have $1,000 here, for sure.
And we learned how to open a safe.
Yeah!
Aah! My God!
That's the best part.
[ Laughs ]
We ended up getting plenty of Jacksons out of this safe.
All right, what a team.
Now it's time to open this "master closet" box.
I'm feeling really good on this box.
SALLY: Watch out. Don't cut yourself.
Always open boxes away from you.
Yeah, away -- toward me.
Laurence opens the box...
Oh.
...and the first thing I see are shoes,
and I think, "Oh, God."
We're off to a bad start.
Hey, honey, look at this -- Derby Nite.
You've got 50 bucks here.
Yeah, probably right, 'cause the covers are great.
SALLY: Laurence throws a couple of things
on the ground behind him, and I notice...
Oh, wait, wait, wait!
"Wait, wait, wait!"
What? This is crap, honey.
It's all bent up.
Well, what does it say?
Well, it says on here "The Kentucky Greyhound Derby, 1925,"
and it was won by The Undeniable.
I think this is awesome.
So, we got quite a collection of greyhound memorabilia here.
We need to take it to an expert in the field of greyhound.
Yay!
There you go.
[ Bell dings ]
SALLY: We know what we have is good.
We just don't know how good it is,
so we need to take it to our friend Joe,
who's the announcer at a local greyhound racetrack.
What do we got today?
We've got a pot here which we got at an auction,
and we'd love for you to take a look at this.
Wow, Laurence, that's a nice-looking cup you have there.
Joe, what kind of trophy we actually got here?
We have a championship-stakes race trophy here back in 1925
in Kentucky, Laurence.
This is quite an item we have here.
No longer do they race greyhounds in Kentucky,
just thoroughbred horse racing.
This is a 1925 Kentucky Derby.
I mean, this has to have some real value to it.
It does, Laurence, but it's not the Kentucky Derby.
It's Erlanger Kennel Club Championship of 1925.
It is one-of-a-kind.
However, we do have a few minor glitches here.
As you can see, the etching's a little worn off.
You still can read it, and you still can identify with it.
It shows its age, but, you know, it's from 1925.
It's almost 90 years old. I mean, come on.
How am I gonna look when I'm 90?
Don't answer that.
Joe, what's the high odds on this one?
33-to-1?
Oh, higher than that, Laurence.
A few minor issues to it, but...
I think this is worth...
...I think 500 bucks would be a good estimated value
on this one.
Whoo-hoo, baby!
$500 -- we're off to the races with this lot.
We really feel like champions here.
[ Laughs ]
BILLY: I spent $400.
I bought one black box and one Navy naval light.
Mayday, Mayday.
I paid $150 for the signal shutter light.
If it's World War II, I could get $1,500 for this piece.
It says, "The Carlisle and Finch Company,
Cincinnati, Ohio, 1963."
This tag definitely doesn't look like 1963.
It looks like 1934.
Because I am convinced that this signal light
is pre-World War II,
the message this signal light is sending me
is "money" -- $1,500 worth.
This black wooden box has to yield something
to make my trip worth coming to Jacksonville.
Come on, baby.
That is so cool!
It's like a sawed-off shotgun or something.
I've handled a lot of guns,
and I genuinely don't know what this is.
"Naval Company, Doylestown, Pennsylvania,
.45-caliber blank."
I am perplexed because this looks like
a sawed-off shotgun to me.
It has this weird aluminum contraption attached to it.
I've never seen anything like this.
I'm not sure exactly what this is,
and I don't know what it's worth,
but I'm gonna go to an expert here in Jacksonville
and get it checked out.
I really don't know what the purpose of this gun is,
so I'm taking it to a marine expert
and finding out what it's worth and what it's used for.
John, how are you?
Billy, what brings you to the low country?
Well, I got something really cool,
and I don't know what it is.
Oh, yeah.
This is a Bridger line-throwing gun.
Bridger.
Bridger?
If you needed to send a chain, a cable, a rope,
between two vessels, this is the tool you'd want to use.
The rod goes in the barrel.
The string goes in the chamber.
You tie the string to the rod.
Shoot it off at about a 30-degree angle.
It'll pull that string anywhere from 100 yards to 1/4 mile.
1/4 mile.
This is a line-throwing gun used for naval rescue operations.
Is it in good condition
as far as these line guns are concerned?
I would say fair condition.
Hmm.
It might cost me a lot of money to get this fixed.
How rare is this line gun?
Less than 1% of the firearms out there
are used for specialty purposes like this.
That's so cool.
John, I'm a money guy.
What is this thing worth?
Billy, but I also know you're a tightwad.
My question to you is what'd you pay for it?
$250.
In the back of my mind...
I don't really have a good feeling about this gun.
...if it does work...
It's not in great condition.
It needs some work.
Now I'm worried.
...if it does work, I'd say $400 in the condition that it's in.
Cleaned up a little bit, I'd add another $200 to that.
Can we test it?
You want to shoot some string?
Let's do it.
I need this gun to work
in order to make this Jacksonville trip pay off.
Loading the gun.
Closing the chamber.
Preparing to fire.
Ready to fire.
BILLY: If this gun doesn't work, it's not worth much.
But if it does, it's worth up to $600.
Loading the gun.
Closing the chamber.
Preparing to fire.
Ready to fire.
Boom!
The thing goes flying through the air.
Hallelujah!
600 bucks, right into my pocket.
Love it.
[ Chuckling ] This thing's amazing.
NARRATOR: Mark was not intimidated
by a man twice his size,
cornering Mike Tyson for an almost $1,400 profit.
Laurence and Sally were off to the races in Florida,
discovering jewelry and a Greyhound trophy,
running away with close to 1,000 bucks.
Billy took a shot in the dark and it paid off,
finding an old signal light and a rescue line gun,
firing off $1,700 in profit.
[ Reveille plays ]
ANNOUNCER: Welcome to the Bestbet here at Orange Park.
Ready for the first race.
First have the daily double.
Grade "A" runners going the sprint course.
It's now race time, and here comes Rusty!
And away they go in the opener.
It's Laurence on the lead. Sally there second.
It's 1, 2, 3, 4 -- Forget about the rest.
By the *** board we go.
They hit the wire!
It's a photo finish!
Ahh!
The powers that be are gonna decide this one.
Now back to you, Laurence and Sally.
