[Narration] It’s that time of year when millions of
geese fill the skies on a cool, cloudy morning and waterfowl hunters attempt to make take
a goose home to their table. But this season, Texas Parks and Wildlife has arranged for
an all-women’s goose hunt to take their aim.
(Man) “A lot of birds coming in here… looks good for the ladies.”
[Narration] It’s a familiar sight to see flocks of geese flying south for the winter.
(Man) “I like it.” [Narration] But what may not be so familiar
is the flock of women pursuing them. (Dawn Bello) “There’s a confidence that’s
involved in this … especially for young women.”
[Narration]The hunt began at four am with setting up the decoys.
(Woman)"I'm ready to shoot some geese" (Man) “You put them into the wind and kinda
just give a little pop like that …that wind will catch it and move it and all that good
stuff.” [Narration] And now to wait for the birds.
(Dawn) “I got together with a couple of friends and contacted some outfitters …to
put together a hunt designed for women. I wanted the women to feel like they can give
themselves permission to go outdoors with each other, by themselves.”
(Woman) "Big excitement is when you see that huge flock."
(Man)"Wow, look at that." (Woman) "–coming out and there's hundreds
of them." (Man)"Ya'll get ready."
[Narration] And the confidence comes through. (Woman) "The excitement of who's going to
get the next one is pretty fun." (Man) "Kill that bird!"
(Woman) “I’m kind of slow to get up. I’ve never shot up to shoot. I’ve always been
standing and hitting something that is going in a uniformed pattern…but I’m getting
more comfortable.”
“It’s really really nice to meet other ladies that are interested in doing it. Every
time I shoot, I get a hit." [Narration] Like all good things this to had
to end, but there will always be a next time. (Woman) “These women are bonding with each
other out there and that’s awesome because I know they’re going to call each other
and you know, they’re going to hunt together again.”
(Woman) “I think we shot 20 birds today. Yeah, pretty good for a bunch of ladies.”
