>> [Background Music] Higher education is really facing major
change today.
We're moving away from the traditional instructor-focused
classroom to student-focused learning environments.
What this means is the instructor is no longer the
source of and the deliverer of all of the knowledge
and information, but rather a coach or a guide
to help students self-discover and learn on their own.
There's a trend right now to move towards blended learning
and flipped classroom environments.
Blended learning involves the incorporation of online outside
of class work for students
where students are doing a lot more information gathering
and then online using course management tools or software
or the Internet to get all of the resources that they need.
Then come into class and working with an instructor to discuss
that or to get an extension of that in a group environment.
The flipped classroom takes it a step further
and completely removes the lecture component
from the classroom all together,
puts the information gathering responsibility squarely
on the student's shoulders so that the student is
in a sense learning how to learn and gather the information
on their own with the teacher as the assistant or the coach
or the guide helping them navigate the learning process.
So in a flipped classroom,
instead of seeing a professor standing at the blackboard
or chalkboard or white board writing
and the students copiously taking notes,
you will seen an instructor working with small groups
on problems, case studies, current event discussion.
There's no more one way delivery;
it's a very interactive, it's a very hands-on, very engaged.
And then the other class in that second day of the week
if it's a two-day a week class, you might find an open lab
where students come in and get help if they need it.
We're not using a one size fits all anymore.
Educators are realizing, "I've got to be able
to help my students and reach them no matter
where they are using the technologies
that are available."
And so digital technologies, flipped classrooms,
blended learning, digital textbooks,
you name it, are all a part of this equation for helping focus
on the student and their success.
