for speaking with gregory cynthia cut president of the u_s_ student
association and he's also the first openly gay asian-american to serve in
this post borja grow up which is cool yes so i am actually was boring and i
think a lot
but i grew up most of my life in sacramento california and graduated from
u_c_l_a_ today
so how old were you when you move to the u_s_
out i was actually really leon how it was when i was around one year old older
so it's it's i'd been in the u_s_ for awhile professor i was so i was born in
argentina and i was five women with the u_s_ so you know as basically raised in
the u_s_ delay going to find mostly with
being an entertainer anyone is you're very very odd
yet extremely and actually don't even really remember being
info on the phone
all my memories of childhood memories of my experiences evolve in here and to
california specifically
has even back to normal
and then back to bomb alan i plateau going there i was actually there
because my combat those in the in the navy my dad was in the air force and so
was i was actually in a military base life my family's from the philippines
tel
so you want to u_c_l_a_ what did you major in what was here area of study
yeah so i think in sociology labor hard place studies
with his pretty thinking that i was actually now what i wanted to go into
battle in an instant took the fifth
and how did you get involved with usfca
yeah i i got involved in a lot of different ways of my first draft and i
was actually a grassroots organizing training
i want nellis held at our campus
and i was my first year of is my first year of squirrel and i was looking to
get involved and i was looking to meet other people an oath a chain of actually
connect me with different organizations and that we're working on issues are
related to students of color in access in but ability to higher education in
support for surgical especially when it actually got into the university alan
and got kind of continue to get a volatile attended a except conference
here in washington d_c_ and continued to get more involved and became a trainer
whether trainers photograph is organizing weekend that the depression a
i i thought to attend death made of joining their board directors and then
um... that usually run for office officer position after that thursday our
next question whether the president is in office that is elected appointed
uh... i was just a job interview type thing
for before we get to that howled review when you came out
yes ill that's a complicated question ok of italians uh...
i came out my into my first year to not only in college but i didn't come out
into my parents until actually about a year-and-a-half ago woes are more recent
so how many years worry i don't know how many years it's been since your first
year in college now many years where you out but not to your parents yeah so
haven't my first year of college list two thousand four so it's been
though it may be a lot with the within for five years that happy with what
uh... how much my parents after that and why
how did that come about why did you decide and we've kind of that everybody
know except for your parents
i think a lot of people either knew where they assumed picking up a lot of
it was you know as i was going to michael in my college experience in
being able to meet new people and in
and
we have a tessick for myself and identity and take classes in you know
where the college so i think you will enjoy it with
unpaid i was able to having a big part of it was what i was doing a lot of
organizing a rat within the l_d_p_ t community in
appreciating about my family and i think and couldn't really
we completely open with them and then secondly actually was elected vice
president two thousand e
you know coming to d_c_ making the big ship was really big and i was
was really uplifted in really recognized for some of the work that i was doing
within the argentine also larger asian american community
so was that
when was the most difficult part about kind of being out but not everybody i
mean is that do you have to constantly thinking about who knows what and what
can i mention the name working exactly and i think they are part of the money
listening to my parents because i was like war
as i'm continuing to do more organizing as i'm continuing to get more involved
their my like who i was as a person in that aspect of any u_s_ company being
attached to me so i had this really big fear of
her parents by googling my name or someone writing my name and then finding
reading an article or something he might get outing in that way so
i wanted to just go ahead and tell them and i think other piece of my parents
was also around like
i was saying to me guys that was like sign to have feelings for andrew i
didn't want wanted to be out twenty four hours a week alike
share than anyone else had a relationship with the had serious
interest in so i mean are you basically www living multiple lives there have is
that what it feels like
that that's what it does it it is still extend minute but i realize you know
i am proud of it i missus exactly
you know and the work they're doing as a sailor's partially being able to uplift
and power and the other
yen openly as you can see folks especially asian american community
that you can of
in india in these different in these types of positions in the air and can be
able to help make change and can be yourself
and so once they came out of and i feel like a whole burden was lifted off my
shoulders new couple weeks ago on my show i hampden massachusetts and
springfield massachusetts one of the most dangerous cities in the country in
terms of gang violence in gun crimes they needed police officers at a police
officer on the show michael kearney
more interesting interviews i've done and he
had been on the force for twenty-something years and at one point
he left because he was closeted in the situation and become such that it wasn't
at all comfortable instance job
he came out and he went back along with a few other officers who'd also been
gone but didn't come out while they were you know they want to go
and he wasn't given its job back and he felt
that it was just discrimination because he was out that's the only thing that
had changed between him and all of these other officers that were coming back
he ended up fighting it and actually did get his job back and it was just
incredible to me that in springfield massachusetts is a city that needs good
police officer and he was a good police officer
there's no reason that they shouldn't have been how do you have been
asking him to come back and work
but
are you surprised when you hear about situations where
beyond dole launched beyond all other necessity somebody is discriminated
against just for their *** orientation and indeed it defies it
defies logic doesn't sometimes is a skill like that i think i still think
he's going to be quite honest it even though u_s_ is a very nurturing and
loving organization
he never presented for use the same coalition meeting is going to meetings
on the hill
you know that in the department of education the white house in and and it
really in erecting a larger d_c_-three kind of political arena i still live
like that within you know in that context and so
sometimes you're on uncomfortable with things that happening you get a feeling
that maybe the situation is not uh...
as good as it could
welcoming miracle is welcoming a model for those very clear dynamics right and
even feel like there's another
other people that i know better who are all sides of the tea bag
they like to have to change for the harley fit this in more than that can't
be an asset that they can share that i mean that they have to
and and so even some of it is a really internalize the people who say well you
know i'm gay and i have to be not to have the funds and i have the taylor's
different things than are
meeting david l made a celebrity who exactly they are airtight kind of
interpret it sometimes
