Good day tennis fans and welcome back to tennis now’s twice weekly news update show.
Serena Williams dominated the WTA Championships this weekend taking out Maria Sharapova in
the finals for her seventh title of the year. After the match Williams had this to say:
“I was like a heavy favorite going in to win this title, so for me it was really important.
I mean, for my own sanity, so to say. I really wanted it, even though I didn’t need it.
Like I don’t think I needed to do anything else this year — or any other year — but
I really wanted to end on a good note.” Well you can always count on Serena to be
good for an interesting quote. David Ferrer took his sixth title of the year
in Valencia and Juan Martin Del Potro denied Roger Federer his sixth Basel title after
defeating the him in the finals. Both Ferrer and Del Potro are poised to do well at the
World Tour Finals in London. Following his loss to Del Potro, Federer pulled
out of the Paris Masters to rest for the World Tour Finals. With this loss he will lose his
World No. 1 ranking to Novak Djokovic next week after 302 weeks at the top.
California’s School for the Blind has introduced their students to tennis using foam balls
filled with metal beads that rattle on impact, allowing them to locate the ball when it hits
the ground or racket. Once the ball is served, the players have to return it before it bounces
three times. Be sure to enter our name pronunciation contest
