Leaseholders of hundreds of townhouses and apartments,
who've paid no rent for 15 years, will now pay steep new rent fees
for Ngati Whatua land near Auckland's waterfront.
The decision follows a long-running dispute
over rent for the land.
Now they'll be given their dues.
This land belongs to Ngati Whatua o Orakei
and it's valued at $12 million.
However, they've never received rent from the leases.
The arbitrator has now ruled that this has to stop.
For 15 years, Ngati Whatua o Orakei hadn't received any money
from surrounding businesses.
But now that's about to change.
Land of which the BNZ is located on,
and the Parnell Terraces, have been valued.
The arbitrator's decision sets a precedent for other lessees
on the entire 20ha.
We've put a lot of work and a lot of hours into this.
We believe the arbitrator has made the right decision.
He has one thing to say to those lessors who disagree;
The lessors have no right to complain.
Lessees of this land
have tried to say its value was only worth $6-7 million,
but the arbitrator has ruled otherwise.
