I have always liked listening to someone reading a book. It adds a personal touch by the narrator
which tends to give deeper insight into the story. But there are also readers that overdo
impersonation and listening does take away some of your own imagination.
My parents often read out books for my siblings and me when I was really young, in the time
before I could read. Back then the way they read out the book made it easier for my undeveloped
imagination to extend itself. It was also great to lie in bed and listen to s story.
Some narrators, Steven Fry is one of the best I have heard, bring a story to life. I don't
like it when each character is given a separate person that reads their dialogue, instead
if there is only one narrator the book is read out as you might read it yourself, you
give characters specific voices and imagine their voice when they are caught by emotion.
For travelling audiobooks are great. When I catch the bus (parking is incredibly expensive
in the city, I would have to spend $2000 per year on it) or have a long drive listening
to a book makes time fly and an otherwise boring and unnecessary activity enjoyable.
I often look forward to the ride home and not only because of the destination.
If you are looking for a great provide for audiobooks audible.com has the solution (please
read the about page for links and recommendations I provide). They offer a membership where
you get credits which are worth one book (usually) at a much lower price than the retail price.
I have been subscribed to audible for several months now and I have no complaints about
them.
