Hi I'm Cecily Crow and I was born here in Portland Oregon
I would have had a normal American childhood but that all changed when I
was 4
and my parents moved us to Asia. They were international school teachers so we
spent 14 years eating chicken feet soup
climbing Mount Fuji and learning different languages.
Yes it was as epic as it sounds.
And yes mom, I do appreciate it now that I'm older.
But it was hard too. Our classrooms were melting pots of culture and ethnicity
but
as a kid I mostly just felt like the whitest girl in the room.
I latched on tight to the dream of being an actress when I finally experienced
true connection
despite the cultural isolation that defined my childhood. Sitting in a darkened
theater one time I looked over at an Indonesian girl near me and realized
that I could spend twenty years traveling and learning languages and
working every day to further global understanding, or I could train as an
actress
and learn to speak a truth on film that is understood everywhere.
After college I was accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts
(totally the school Grace Kelly went to.) And then I came back here
to Portland to hone my craft. The industry here is bursting with talent
and passion and ideas and this:
("Put a bird on it!") but I decided it's time to take the big leap.
Cause it's time for some change in Hollywood. It's time for strong female
leads, multicultural plotlines and honest
storytelling. It's the Golden Age independent filmmaking
and I'm gonna write and act and play and love and laugh myself on to screens
around the globe. Because the world's a whole lot bigger than hollywood's telling
you
and we all need to remember to zoom out every once in a while
