The Prime Minister's Education Excellence Awards
recognise and celebrate outstanding achievement in education.
This year, schools from the Hawke's Bay dominated the awards,
citing their Maori focus to education as a game-changer.
Hania Douglas has more.
The government honouring the best of the best in education.
It's great to see educational excellence
being achieved in these schools.
Last night the Prime Minister's Education Excellence Awards
took place with Flaxmere College taking out top honours.
I'd like to congratulate Flaxmere College
for all the work they're doing to support their students.
It's great to see the exceptional work that they are doing
and being an example for other schools in their local area.
Other winners include
Rotorua Girls High School for the excellence in governance,
William Collenso College for the 2018 focus prize,
and Toru Fetu Kindergarten for excellence in engaging.
The Associate Minister of Education says
we need to celebrate schools who are working hard to excel.
The schools that have been recognised are doing great things.
All of those schools are supporting their students.
Cash awards include $3000 to all finalists,
$20,000 to the winners in each category,
and an additional $30,000 to the supreme award winner,
but Flaxmere College says
the real reward is seeing their students succeed.
The winners of the night say their awards are a testament
to the fact that the education sector
is finally seeing the merits of embracing the Maori culture
to see our kids thrive.
Hania Douglas, Te Karere.
