Hi I'm Matt, I'm a TOEFL teacher here at LSI.
I've been here for two years and I've been teaching TOEFL for over three years.
Can you please let me know more about the TOEFL test?
The TOEFL test stands for the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
It's for people who are coming into the United States and they want to go to university here.
They divide the test into four parts: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing and it tests all of those skills.
What should I expect if I take the TOEFL class?
So here at LSI, the program is designed to teach you some of the different strategies for taking the test
as well as developing your skills for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
We use textbooks; we also use computers and you get feedback from the professors about how you are doing.
I'm nervous about the reading section, so how can your class help me improve my score?
The TOEFL class here at LSI is going to mostly focus on the different kinds of questions on the reading test.
We'll also read a lot of academic passages to improve your reading comprehension and we'll add some vocabulary in there as well.
How about the listening test?
A lot of the class is designed to improve your listening comprehension through note-taking skills,
and understanding what kinds of questions that they ask on the TOEFL test.
The speaking test also scares me. How can the computer practice improve my speaking score?
Yeah, most students are scared about the speaking test.
Our class is going to first give you the confidence to speak about everyday topics as well as academic topics.
We will also focus on getting comfortable speaking in front of a computer, about the different kinds of questions on the test.
What is the main focus of the writing section?
Our class focuses mostly on the American style essay, the essays that the universities here expect you to be able to write,
some on grammar and some on sentence structure, but mostly on how to write the different kinds of essays that the test tests you on.
Thank you so much for all the information.
You are very welcome. Good luck to you in the future!
