Hey guys, today we're going to learn how to keep our food safe from bears and other critters.
Let's go! It's always a great idea to have rope with you when you're out in the bush
or in the forest. Today we're cutting some rope to hang our food from wild critters like
skunks, raccoons, squirrels, and my dad. Today I'm going to cut my rope around twenty feet
long, to do that I have to do this with my arms around six or seven times cause my arms
are about three feet long. I keep my Swiss army knife around my neck in case I need it
for emergency. When you're cutting your rope you always wanna cut it away from you so you
don't stab yourself in the stomach. Sweet! Now that you've cut your rope you have frayed
ends and then your rope will start falling apart. To prevent that from happening we will
burn it with some fire and it'll keep it from fraying. You can use a lighter like this;
my nice pink lighter. I recommend a barbecue lighter so you don't burn yourself. There
should always be parent supervision so you will definitely not burn yourself. Now the
end won't fray apart but remember not to touch it, it's still really hot. As soon as the
end is all black, you know that you're good to go. I have a waterproof bag. They're ideal
for hanging food! See it has a seal? You close it and you roll it one, two, three times,
you get the clips, and you twist it like that, and you clip it together, and right here on
this little hoop we're going to put our rope through it and hang it on a tree. I'll put
my rope through. You tie it once, twice, and that's a simple overhand knot and that will
hold it tight for the night. We need to put some rocks in our bag that we can throw over
the bough of our tree to counter weigh our food. Yeah this is heavy enough, it should
do. You always need to untangle your rope before you throw it up there so you make sure
it'll go all the way up. Let's try it one more time. So close! Third time's the charm!
Yeah! Sweet. K, now it's time to heave ho. Pull your rope over and let's hang up our
food. Now it's safe from all... Now it's time to tie it off to a tree or a branch. Here
we're lucky because we have a root coming out and it has a hole underneath. Now your
food is safe up in the tree. It's always a good idea to have it not close to other trees
and a branch that goes farther along but we didn't have a tree like that where we are
now. I'm gonna be a raccoon and climb up for food. I'm hungry! Guess I'm not meant to be
a raccoon. Let's pretend it's morning now. I'm hungry. Good food? Bad food, good food,
bad food. Oh, alright. A good idea to keep all your rope together is in your bag neatly
put it all together. You put it right in your bag and it's ready for the next time you wanna
use it. Just like that. Jump in to the great outdoors!
