There is a saying in Marathi: "Food is God."
I deliver food to people every day.
I have an opportunity to serve everyone.
I think it was destiny.
The reason for our unity is the principles
of the Varkari sect that each one of us follows.
Our saint Tukaram said:
"It's only by helping each other that we can achieve a goal."
Our system of operation is unique, But, at the same time, it is very simple.
The uniqueness lies in the code system.
The code system reveals the destination
of the dabbas, from home to office.
The code depicts everything.
“Aunty, you were late today.”
Our process is like a relay race.
Even if a person lags behind,
the next person compensates for the lost time.
So that the dabba is on time.
“Whose tiffin box is this?”
Our codes are a combination of
colors, numbers and alphabets.
The reason is that many of us are semi-literate.
“How are you, Khokhete?”
It is like racing against time every day,
but no matter what, I win.
Being a Dabbawala means a lot to me.
People look up to me.
When I am invited by companies abroad to conduct sessions on time management,
I feel like I have been given
a proper position in society.
Prince Charles came to meet us at Churchgate station.
When he was getting married, only four people from India were invited,
two of which were Dabbawalas.
I am not scared of my work.
But I am scared of my daughter, because if I don’t bring her candies
I am not allowed to enter my own house.
