-It is a plastic container, connected to a funnel.
-On top of it there is a plastic cross.
-They fly into the cross and fall into the container.
-You just heard Glenn Svensson, a scientist at Lund University-
describing the pheromone traps that he and his students-
have put out in the forest to catch bugs.
-We are studying pheromone communication-
in two rare woodland living bugs;
the Hermit Beetle and the Red Click Beetle.
-Ever had one of these walk on you?
-Yeah, they are tricky!
-They do have quite a grip, don´t they!
-The traps are non-destructive, so we can release them-
after we´ve marked them.
-Through these kinds of inventories we get a good overview-
of species distribution and abundance.
-We want to integrate pheromone research in nature conservation.
-Chemo ecological research in insects has traditionally-
been used to get rid of pests.
-But I, along with Matias Larsson at SLU, Alnarp-
think that these systems could be used in the opposite way-
and help to save endangered species.
-We want to use our data as a tool for nature conservation.
-In this trap we had pheromones from Hermit beetles
and from Red Click Beetles.
-What we´ve got here are two female Hermit Beetles.
-They have been attracted by the male Hermit scent.
-In the same trap we also had pheromones from female Click Beetles
-In this way we´re supposed to capture both males and females
-This time we got a female.
-We don´t have a male to compare with.
-…Kind of feisty…
-Do they really click?
-Yes, they do! Listen…
-Now it clicks!
-…click…click..
