Family Planning has introduced a new scheme
to teach primary schoolchildren sexuality education.
Pere Wihongi has more.
Something nobody can avoid.
This is Family Planning's goal -
to teach our children at an early age
about gender and sexuality.
A new plan has been introduced
to teach children from Year 1 to Year 4,
that's 5- to 8-years-old.
This isn't looking at teaching kids about the reproductive system
and *** relationships,
but instead the differences between a girl and boy,
the names of the body parts and their own identity.
And Te Puawai Tapu, a Maori health service, believes
the subject should be taught under Maori values.
But there are those who think the topic should be kept at home.
The subject is expected to be beneficial,
hundreds of copies will be printed
before the release to the public.
