Hi everybody, I'm Bob. Maulou: And I'm Milou. Welcome to Know your PC.
Bob: Today we're going to talk to you about the HP TouchSmart PC IQ 500
Series. Milou: And Bob is going to show us how to connect to the internet.
Bob: That's right. Wirelessly and wired. Milou: And then once we get connected,
I'm going to show you how to use Touch Browser.
Bob: So let's start. Let me show you how to get to the internet because
that's the one thing everybody loves with the computer these days is getting
on the internet and checking out your favorite sites. So here
is an ethernet cable. This is what most people connect to internet with.
It's, as you can see, a little bit fatter than a normal phone cable. Milou: a
giant phonejack. Bob: Absolutely, now this computer, the HP TouchSmart IQ500 Series,
only supports broadband connections. So if you do have dial-up
you will need to buy an external modem
and you can connect via a USB port.
All right, hold this for me please, and I am going to show you the connection area
behind the PC. All right,
and this right here is our little connector panel right here and I'm going
to remove it.
Milou: All the ports.
Bob: Exactly, these are connectors. We're looking for the LAN (Local Area Network)
area. That's where we put our ethernet cable.
Milou: Oh, but you want to put it through the fancy area back here.
Bob: Oh you're so good! Milou: It keeps your wires untangled.
Bob: I taught her so well. You are learning my apprentice. There is a
clip manager right here for this small space.
Milou: Ah, a clip manager. Bob: What will those people think of next?
All right, we're going to put our
cover back on.
Milou: See, it's all nice and neat. I like that.
Bob: I love it too so let's turn this around.
Milou: So are we automatically connected? Bob: We are not because I've got to go
plug the other end into the back.
All right, so this is the other end and you will need to connect this into
your router, into your modem that your service provider provides for you or
into the wall. All right, so will you please assist me?
Milou: Sure. Bob: I've got to go around. Here we go! Off to the
back of Studio D. This is Studio D. I can't believe we're in the
bowels of the earth.
Don't look directly in the light.
Milou: Where do you want this?
Bob: Bring it down through here.
All right, it's down at the bottom. Thank you.
Don't mind the cobwebs and
don't mind some of the locals, you know what I mean?
All right, so here is our cable box
and this is also where the wireless modem is and I'll show you how to
plug that in later. But first,
we're going to plug ethernet cable into the box.
Very easy and
let's go find the internet. Put your bathing suits on everybody!
We're going surfing.
All right. Milou: Hey, how's it going?
Bob: Got cobwebs all over me. All right, so.
Milou: Plugged it in there?
Bob: So now you can see that the computer's, this is the icon for the network
connection.
And there was an X there before, but there is not now. 0:03:09.089,0:03:110.059 Milou: They are like two little computer screens there. Bob: And they're talking to
each other. So we connect via our web browser and
it's talking, it's thinking, it's loading. We have the internet!
Milou: We're wired. Bob: Woo hoo!High five, come on. Milou: Good job, way to go.
Now you're going to show us how to do it wirelessly.
Bob: That's right. We've got to close that out. Unplug it from the back so you
guys don't go, "He was just using the wired connection. He wasn't really using
wireless. No PC unit has a wireless card." Ha ha, this one does.
Milou: Now we're ready to go wireless. Are there antennas in here?
Bob: There is. See, like a laptop, there's a wireless LAN card in here and the
antennas are up here. All right, as you see down here we're not connected
so what I'm going to do is take the mouse, I'm going to right click
on the connection icon. "Connect to a network". Yes, I'm clicking that. Now we
have already set up our wireless network.
If you don't have one at home you go buy a wireless router,
set it up on your computer. I'm not going to to go into it. It's very simple.
Milou: Oh, now will you have all these networks here. This say unsecured network
right here. Bob: So the network in Studio D is unsecured for purposes of surfing the
internet. Milou: This is Studio D Bob: Absolutely.
Now of course there might be a security password which means you need to put in
that password.
Uh, wireless router basically, if you guys don't have one, it's easy to set up
at home. I'm not going to show you,
but it will put out its signal and you want to click on the one
that is yours. So we are Studio D like I said. We'll connect
and now the computers will start talking to each other.
And now we're connected so I'll close. Milou: Successfully connected to studio D.
Bob: Now we can go onto the internet.
Milou: We're connected?
Bob: We're back on. Now I also want to mention real quickly
if you go and you put the arrow just over
the computer's icon here you'll see
that it shows you the network you are on. It also shows you some green bars.
Now, if for some reason, the internet is running slower or you're not
getting as much data as fast as you normally are, it's because
you might have some interference the computer and router might be too far apart
so you can bring them together or if you have a metal door or microwave on,
Milou: Turn it off?
Bob: Turn it off because that will interfere
with our antennas and stuff like that. All right,
So we are all connected. Milou: You got us wired and wirelessly connected.
So now we're going to show you how to use the Touch
Browsers. So to do that, let's launch the HP TouchSmart home screen. That little
house there.
All right, so you have the large tiles and small tiles. Now that we have to the
internet, I would like to use a website so I could see it live,
right there on the top, OK.
So to personalize or create that you want to touch the
personalize button down there and then I'm going to add a tile so touch Add a tile.
I want to choose a type like website. Bob: We want a website, so we're going.
Milou: OK so now we're going to Next. And then it says
target up here so I'm going to touch Target and I'm going to type in which website.
Bob: Well I love watching videos so obviously let's go to YouTube. Milou: OK so you must
type in the www to direct it,
and then YouTube
right here on the keyboard, then dot com. You also have to type that in.
And then I'm going to touch OK because that's all done.
See the OK light lights up.
That means we're ready to go and then it automatically launches in the lower tiles.
I'm going to drag-and-drop because I want it up here. Bob: It looks like a cute mini
page. Milou: Isn't that nice? See the live content that was all moving?
Bob: So this is streaming live content. Milou: Exactly. Since you got us
connected, you can see what all the talk is about.
All right, I'm going to tap it.
We're going to full screen here.
So that's all personalized. Bob: So this is our TouchSmart
browser window. Milou: Where do you want to go?
Bob: Let's see if there's any competing videos for TouchSmart. There's one. It's touch
and fly dunbar cameraman three Shawn right here.
Milou: So go to TouchSmart, Bob: And then
put fly. Milou: OK.
So I want to show you something because if you take a swipe there, what's neat about
this is you can actually scroll up and down with two fingers.
All right, so you just put
your fingers here, so if you want to find, see if you want to
highlight with the blue, use one finger. You can you know take off
this highlight function by just tapping it once.
You can also use the scroll bar on the right there.
Go ahead and touch up and down there.
And the other thing is that this is one of my favorites, so what happens as we
have a little star with a plus sign. Touch that and it will
automatically add to the favorites and then there
is another star right here without the plus sign on it and that has
all my favorites. So did you find that video? Bob: It's right here on top.
Milou: Touch it.
And away we go.
Bob: I'm going to make it bigger
so we can watch it.
Milou: Watch it in full screen.
Bob: I love this. You're watching this on your computer.
Milou: Isn't that nice?
Okay, so we have shown
you how to get to the internet wired and wirelessly, and how to use a touch browser.
Bob: Absolutely thank you very much.
All right, so if you guys have any more questions, obviously you
can always go to hp.com/TouchSmart
Milou: You can also send us an email at knowyourpc@hp.com.
Bob: Thanks for watching us. We'll see you next time.
