Students from the Multi-Cultural Student Association at the Lambuth campus
made a trip to Memphis to tour the National Civil Rights Museum this week. The 2013 Research
Celebration honored 9 faculty members who have become "PI Millionaires", or principal
investigators who have raised over a million dollars for their research. Also, those who
received their first research grant, and faculty members who wrote or edited books were recognized
as well. Dr. LaSimba Gray spoke at the Black History Month closing ceremony and the recipients
of the scholarships from the Luther C. McClellan chapter of the Alumni Association and the
Authur S. Holmon scholarship were announced as well. In addition, the Black Student Association
raised over 5000 dollars for the medical bills of former student Shayna Isom, who was forced
to leave the U of M after contracting an extremely rare skin disease. And Women's history month
began with Dr. Janann Sherman, the chair of the department of history, presenting some
findings about many of the great women she has researched. For the U of M minute, I am
John Miller, senior, film and video major.
