In 1950's a group of faculty got together and decided they wanted to do something
special
they wanted to create an institution that was
it was unique it was a liberal arts college where scholarship and research in
excellence were important but that was going to be accessible
gonna be accessible to all New Yorkers and everyone across the country
as we know Harper college
has been here a long time sixty-two years
and it's been intellectual heart on the campus
and it's quite amazing that we have now put that heart
where it belongs in the center the campus
I think it's really fitting that we gather to dedicate
two spaces that commemorates
Harper College is distinguished past
and really also recognize its centrality to the future
of this great University the Harper quad
is really the center of our campus the pylon has moved three times
It was on the Binghamton side of Bartel drive when I was a student here
it was shifted to the Vestal side as Harper College
morphed into Grand SUNY Binghamton but Harper was fading
in later years many of us who returned to campus
had to ask where's Harper well
I say let it be here at this pylon
at this quad let this pylon the represented hope
and the new home the way to the future still represent that hope
and our home that are all roots
in addition to the quad we are also
dedicating today the Harper College wall
excellence the wall recognizes
things past and present
that make Harper College great
it reminds us over values the commitment to excellence
and the willingness to do things a little bit differently
that have made Harper College in Binghamton University
the special places that they are humanities and social sciences the fine
arts
natural sciences we've combined them with this one centerpiece
we've also connected the past
and the future
