Counter terrorism
Terrorist acts are detrimental to the civil society, and a terrorist act goes beyond the loss of lives.
Since 2001 PST’s highest priority has been
to prevent politically motivated violence inspired by extreme Islamism.
There is nothing to indicate a change of this pattern.
The last 8 years security and police services in Europe and USA have prevented
almost 100 terrorist cells from completing their planned acts.
In Norway there are today smaller groups and individuals
sympathizing with and actively supporting extreme Islamism.
Propaganda activity and transfer of money to persons
connected to extreme Islamist organizations abroad are examples of this.
PST concentrates on identifying persons who may be affiliated with terrorist networks.
The objective is to stop planned terrorist acts from materializing.
So far Norway has been situated in a calm corner of the world.
But the threat situation is complex and the situation may rapidly change.
Al-Qaida has on numerous occasions threatened to carry out acts in Europe.
Experience shows that terrorist acts have been completed without prior warning.
