Mr. Skoulikaris is a father of one daughter.
12 years (1995) ago he found out he was diabetic.
He speaks to us regarding his diabetes and how the disease affected,
his everyday life and work.
He also demonstrates -something that several of you ask through your
phonecalls- how the insulin pump works, that he always wears and how his blood
sugar is controlled.
I consider myself lucky to be diabetic! If I was to choose a disease, that is!
The main medicine for diabetes, is having a good and positive mood!
You don't feel something when blood sugar is within limits.
The 34 years old (2007) Antonis Skoulikaris,
talks to us about the life of a diabetic.
I discovered that I was a diabetic 12 years ago, in 1995;
I was a 22 years old student at the time.
I had some symptoms of hunger, thirst, always wanted to use the bathroom...
I lost weight and had no clue what was happening to me...
10 years after, the research is so advanced that today,
I do not feel any difference of being a diabetic.
Today I control my blood sugar with the use of an insulin pump.
This is the pump!
It is connected to the body with a thin tube and there is also a sensor,
permitting me to see the actual blood sugar at any given time.
It is connected to the body with the following way.
You choose the spot on the body...
You inject it and remove the needle.
The only thing needed now is choose what you want to eat (there are
carbohydrates' guides), let's say a chocolate of 100gr. containing 46 carbs:
We see the actual level of blood glucose (150 in our case), we input the 46 intake
of food and the pump informs us of the active insulin in our blood and how many
units of insulin are needed to be injected: 4.6 units in this case.
We also have the 24 hours continuous intake that keeps our blood sugar stable
at all times.
Was Antonis' work affected by diabetes?
I really do not know how it is to work less than 10-12 hours per day.
It is a fact, however that I my work mood and performance were not affected all
those years.
The message of Antonis is:
Leave the diabetic (child or adult) free!
Diabetes is a "friend" that we will have for life.
And you have to take care of your friend if you want him to take care of you...
Very nice... Diabetes is a friend.
