This is the improv activity called In a Melancholy Mood. And what you're going to be working on here
is improvising tunes in white key five finger patterns.
so you're going to start on the A minor pattern and you're going to move to the G major pattern
and you're going to alternate those two patterns within this improv.
This is the improvisation called In a Melancholy Mood. In this improv, you're going to be using two different white key five-finger positions.
One is the A minor position; music playing . . .
and the other is the G major position. music playing . . .
and you're going to be moving back and forth between the two positions as you can see in the score.
You are starting on the A position, then you're going to move to the G position,
then you're going to move back to the A position and you're going to end on the G position.
Allright, so this time when I do it I'm just going to practice playing up and down, alternating between the A minor and the G major positions.

I'm going to move in a relaxed manner . . .

and move to G ....

Now that was just a simple drill to practice moving. I want to also remind you to keep your hand very relaxed
and try to have all your fingers resting naturally on the keys like this . . .
music playing
but not like this . . .
music playing
OK, I'm going to do that again.

music playing
OK. If you find your fingers in the air like that you need to slow down, bring it back to the key,
music playing
. . .before continuing. You might have to practice that alot before you can get your hands to relax as quickly as mine can.
Allright, so let's try this improv.
music playing
You'll notice that I try to move my hand to change positions during the rests.
I'm going to try that again to see if I can get something different.

And that's In a Melancholy Mood.
