Good evening everyone, I hope your enjoying you’re Super Bowl Sunday! This is Jon with
the national weather service here in Norman, with a briefing regarding winter weather late
Monday night through Tuesday.
Slide 2 Well, we’ve made it through the first round
of winter weather this week, now lets discuss our second. We expect precipitation to develop
late Monday across the western high plains of Kansas and slowly move eastward across
the Panhandles into the western portions of Oklahoma and western north Texas. Snow will
be the primary precipitation type for locations across northern and western Oklahoma, while
a rain snow mix, sleet, and freezing rain will all be possible early on across portions
of southern Oklahoma and western north Texas. The heaviest snowfall is expected across northern
Oklahoma, with a tight gradient setting up somewhere along and near the I-44 and I-40
corridors through the center of the state.
Slide 3 As for timing, from late Monday night through
Tuesday, snow will gradually increase across northern and western Oklahoma into northern
Texas. As daybreak approaches, snow, sleet, and freezing rain will gradually increase
across central Oklahoma, with rain across southern Oklahoma and portions of northern
Texas.
Slide 4 For Tuesday morning and afternoon, snow, heavy
at times, is expected to occur through the day across the northern half of Oklahoma,
with a rain/snow mix continuing through the afternoon across the southern portions of
the state, and rain across the Texoma region.
Slide 5 As for amounts, the heaviest snowfall will
be across northern Oklahoma, with anywhere from 4 to 6 inches. A winter storm watch has
been issued for northern Oklahoma. At the moment, it appears the best chances for any
accumulating snow will be north of I-40, with a dusting to an inch along and just south
of the I-40 corridor. You may have noticed this is nearly a flip from our Sunday storm
system, with northern Oklahoma receiving the bulk of the precipitation. So for those of
you who felt left out from our recent snowfall, don’t fret, it looks like Tuesday could
be your day.
Slide 6 For the end of the week, after a lull in activity
Wednesday, another storms system will enter the region on Thursday, bringing another round
of winter weather to the area. Wintry precipitation will be possible nearly every day from Thursday
through Saturday. At the moment, snow and sleet appear to be the primary precipitation
types. With focus on the early week system, and many unanswered questions remaining, check
back frequently as we gain a better handle on what to expect for the end of the week.
Takeaways To summarize, it looks like the first week
of February will be an active one, we will face two more rounds of winter weather, with
the first beginning Monday night continuing through Tuesday, and the second will close
out the work week. It is essential you stay weather aware, checking back frequently for
updates as more details are hammered out.
