in this series we will be talking about different types of sources,
evaluating and using information, and we're also going to look at some advanced
searching tips using the web and library resources.
completing this tutorial will enable you to find credible information
more efficiently. after each tutorial,
you can test yourself using the links provided. In addition,
an assessment at the end will measure your knowledge after completing
the entire series before. we get started,
I'd like to introduce you to the library's website. the website
is a portal to many research resources. using the tabs on the front page,
you can access many of those resources including article databases
and NKUIRE, the library's catalog. the library's catalog can be used to search
for books
and ebooks owned by Steely library. in addition
you can find music, movies, and other materials housed inside steely.
another resource I want to make sure you're aware of
is there ask see the library services. here you'll find many options
for getting help from a librarian. in addition to library resources,
you will likely use the internet for a lot of research. we will talk about
Google
later in the series but for now here's a question
why do you think you should care about anything other than using the web to
research?
here's what's some undergraduate
English students have said in the past when comparing Google
to library databases. library resources are reliable and specific.
Google is much more broad. Google
isn't a reliable source. Google is quicker
in a lot less time-consuming library. resources
are more focused. library research. to me.
is more time consuming in more difficult because I'm often unaware
the place to start with library resources. you will hopefully come to your own
conclusions,
but the bottom line here is that Google and the library
are two research tools you have at your disposal.
the tutorials in this series will focus on different aspects
of the research process, with an emphasis on evaluation
and advanced searching. first you're going to look at some information
explaining the difference between popular and scholarly resources.
it's an important concept that you understand before you begin your
research.
