So it’s really important for you to understand that Secretary Clinton has revolutionized
the way in which we are engaging with Muslims at the Department of State. All our embassies
around the world, Muslims in Muslim majority countries, and Muslims that live as minorities
are part of an effort, as laid out by President Obama in his speech in Cairo where he asked
us to more than we’ve ever done before to get to know what is taking place with one-fourth
of humanity, to open up bridges of communication and dialogue and partnership based on a wide
range of things that we all have in common, whether it is science and technology, whether
it is education, whether it is entrepreneurship, we are building new platforms. So at the Department
of State I work with our embassies and get to know this next generation by listening
to their ideas at the grass-roots so the majority of what I do is community to community, grass-roots
efforts around the world that are organic and are really instrumental in understanding
what is taking place even within a country so you get to know what I call a generation
change, a generation of young people who are doing more than they have ever done before
who are sharing their ideas and we are building networks of likeminded thinkers around the
world. So this generation change model is a pivotal and important tool that we can all
use to hear what is taking place with this generation that has grown up using social
media, using platforms that we have never heard before. One of the things that I think
is really powerful is that obviously with 140 characters on Twitter, anybody, anywhere
in the world, whether you are rich or poor, whether you are black or white, whether you
are really well educated or not very well educated, can take your idea and move it forward.
To listen to what this generation says means that we can revolutionize the way we think
about the initiatives and the programs that we have to build for these young people whether
its issues that they are concerned about having to do with the environment, or it has to do
with education, or science and technology, we are not doing it from an ivory tower, we
are doing it from what the grassroots has to say.
