Hi, I'm Paige with Outdoor distributors and i'm here to help you with a
understanding tire sizes one of the most commonly asked questions
these are a couple of pointers that i should point out
tire sizes are measured in inches
the measurements are based on the tire mounted on the rim
under normal psi with no with no load or weight.
when applying inches to rubber
the measurements are approximate and not exact.
there can be ten percent variation in the tire size depending on the
manufacturer
this is important if you are considering mixing brands.
Tires sizes vary slightly based on the number of plies
we will cover Plies at the end of this video
there are three basic numbering systems for a Lawn
equipment tires
the first is a series of three numbers with an X in the series
the second type is a series of three numbers with a slash in the series
and the third is three numbers with a dash in between them
you may or may not have the letters NHS on the side of your tire
NHS stands for non highway service
this means the tire is not approved for use on the highway
now let's take a luke at the first type
in this example we have a tire size with a series of three numbers with an x in
the series
eighteen
by 7.50
by 8
the first number eighteen
means the tires approxmately eighteen inches in diameter or eighteen inches
high
the second number
is 7.5, means the tire approximately 7.5 inches
wide
Note this is the tire width and not the rim width.
thire number eight
is the inner diameter of the tire, commonly known as the rim diameter.
This means this tire will fit on a rim with an 8 inch diameter.
the second type is the tire size with a series of three numbers with the slash
in the series
these numbers are designed for those who love math
4.1 slash 3.50 by 4
the first number is the width of the tire
in this example our first number is
4.10
this means the tires approximately
4.1 inches wide
the second number 3.5
means the tire sections height is approximately 3.5 inches high.
The tire section Height is the measurement from the top of the tread to
the bead seal.
The third number 4 means the inner diameter of the tire is 4 inches.
if you want to know the overall diameter
or overall height of the tire
and here's your math
your section height plus you inner diameter plus your section height again
and this is example 3.5 section height
plus
4 inner diameter plus
3.5 section height
equals eleven
our overall height for the tire is 11 inches
now we have a tire that is eleven inches high
4.1 inches wide
with a rim diameter of 4 inches
Our last type is the tire with two numbers with a dash between them
In this example our tire size is 2.80 dash 4
are 2.80 by 4
the first number, 2.8 is the width of the tire
and the second number is the inner diameter of the tire or the rim width.
with this type of numbering system no height is given and there is no means of
determining the height.
So, We have provided you with a list of the
most common sizes
here's a few rules of thumb
any number to the left of the x is the overall
tire diameter or tire height
Any number following a dash is the inner diameter or rim diameter
math lovers like the slash
If you see an off the wall number like
or 500
then the size in these examples are 11.11 inches
and 5.00 inches.
These guidelines apply to most lawn tractor tires.
but some of you are bound to run into that odd ball tire number
and we are here to help.

while shopping you may notice the prices vary, this is due to the brand
selected and more importantly the plies.
Plies are the number of wraps are simply the thickness of the tread.
for someone who uses their mower a lot you might want to try a 4 ply tread
is more durable
longer-lasting and contains more rubber.
A 4 ply tire will cost more than a 2 ply. We look forward to keeping
