Why do I want a Great Dane?
Well, find out in this video, as I start out these vlog series about the breed of Great
Danes.
Hi! My name is Anna-Maria Eriksson, but you can
call me Aimee.
I've wanted a Great Dane for over 15 years, and I'm still waiting for that perfect moment
to appear when I can finally get a Great Dane of my own.
But why do I want a Great Dane - what is so special about that breed?
Well, for me it's 3 things - Height, beauty and that they are pure couch potatoes - just
like me!
I suffer from Fibromyalgia, which basically means that my muscles are aching constantly.
Stress makes it worse, winter and cold weather is the devil and heavy activity or even standing
in line for two minutes can give me pain for days on end.
So why do I want a dog?
Well... If you are already a Great Dane owner - you know what I'm talking about.
It's like, once you go Great Dane, you never go back!
It all started somewhere in the year 1997, when I watched a movie called "The ugly Dachshund",
that set of my curiosity of the breed.
I'd never seen a Great Dane before in my life. At least I have no recollection of it before
I saw this movie.
But, in the following year, during a trip to the U.S. with my family in the summer of
1998 - I finally found what I was looking for.
Our relatives in Anchorage, Alaska had a neighbour right across the street - and guess what?
They had a Great Dane!
His name was Beau, originally named Beauregard, but we called him "Beulegard" with an L. I
still have no idea why.
He probably originated from the European standard of the breed, because it took him several
days to "accept me into his pack".
After that, though - I was in total heaven and I knew from that day on, that a Great
Dane was the only breed for me.
So far, I haven't been able to get one, though. It's due to several reasons.
Most of it is because lack of money. I've spent 8 years after I finished high school
in an early retirement/sick leave situation, and therefore I've been pretty poor.
Many people say that owning a Great Dane costs a lot of money, and to my own calculations
the sum would be close to $380 per month. I've included the best of the best in that
calculation and also prepared for the worst scenarios as well.
So, when you're on sick leave or a student, which I've been for the past 4 years, you
don't have a lot of money.
That means that the dream of owning a Great Dane has had to wait.
Now, however, I'm getting really close to finally having a Great Dane.
I will graduate from college really soon and I am on a journey to find myself a suitable
job - where a Great Dane will fit in perfectly.
My goal is to work a lot from home, or have a job that allows dogs. I will do everything
in my power to make that dream come true.
But wait!
I haven't talked so much on why I want a Great Dane yet.
Like I said in the beginning, I want one due to 3 reasons.
First - It's a beautiful breed.
Second - They are really tall, which helps with me having trouble to bend my knees etc.
Third - they are couch potaoes.
I personally prefer the American standard of the breed.
Why you may ask? Well, that's easy!
They are taller, more leaner, friendlier towards other people outside of their family, and
they do not drool that much. Due to less lip.
In some ways I'm glad that my waiting has taken so long, because it's made me look carefully
to find a suitable breeder.
I've finally found one in Sweden that have the most beautiful Great Danes I've ever seen.
The reason for that is because they have a lot of american Great Danes in their bloodlines.
It's also made the dogs really friendly and cuddly as well.
When you look at a Great Dane, your heart melts of it's beauty and kindness towards
you.
Their height gives you loads of reasons for getting kissed in the face - which of course
is love at its height!
Since my living hell of suffering from fibromyalgia, I prefer the couch, rather than be active.
That's why the Great Dane is a perfect match for me!
