bjbjqPqP Maggie and I started the school in 1983, and when we got together and sat in
my living room on the floor, one of the things that was so amazing was the spark and the
energy and the creativity and the passion that we both shared. And we talked about what
should a school be like. And one of the things that we both said right off the bat is that
learning is lifelong. It doesn't just happen for the years that you're in a school. And
so, if learning is lifelong, then we really need to teach our kids how to be learners
and how to be thinkers. And it needs to be in an environment where you feel comfortable,
where you feel inspired, where you have choices, where it's fun, because we also know that
we tend to do the things we enjoy. We do things we like. So we will continue to learn if we
see it is something that we enjoy and like. It's really important that we have small classes.
Every child gets a voice when they're in a small classroom. They get that individualized
attention from the teacher. It's a very safe environment. They really teach the children
to respect each other and respect everybody's individuality. With 14, 15, 10, 12 kids per
class, they're actually able to be a real active part of every learning experience.
In a small classroom, even the child who's doing fine, but perhaps not reaching their
potential, is really supported and encouraged to really reach as far as they can go. We
believe that our job as teachers is to teach kids how to learn, to show them how to think
and how to process and how to ask questions. He's learning how to really be a thinker,
and we see that when he comes home and he starts carrying on conversations with us that
we never knew that a kindergartner could carry on. Interpersonal skills are a big focus at
our school and within our curriculum because we recognize how important they are in success
in life. When you look around our school, you will see keys that are posted in each
one of our classrooms. These keys are important things that we feel lead to successful lives.
They're things like integrity, speaking with good purpose, that failure leads to success.
The philosophies here at TCPS were one of the things that drew my husband and I to the
school in the first place. We had met a group of children at the park before our kids even
attended here, and we just loved the way they were interacting with the teachers and the
relationship they had. And we could tell some of the philosophies that were transferred
into the students. Our school is a fun place to be. You can walk through the halls, you
can walk through the classrooms, and you see joy, the joy of learning. We named the school
The Child's Primary School because the child is primary, and that commitment has been our
inspiration since 1983. We would love for you to come and see the school for yourself.
