>> Alyssa Dugar: My name's Alyssa Dugar.
I am a sophomore currently at Baker College.
Whoo! I love Baker.
I graduate in the year 2015, so I'm very excited.
I still have a lot of time though, at Rice.
I chose to come to Rice because my sister actually went here
and she just graduated this spring.
So she was here during my freshman year, and it was an amazing experience.
When she first came in, I remember coming with her on move in day, and I just saw the campus,
and I immediately fell in love with the campus.
And as she went through her years here, I learned more about Rice academically
and I learned more about the culture at Rice and I absolutely fell in love with it.
Rice was the only college that I applied to.
I actually applied Early Decision, because I knew I wanted to come to Rice and I got in, yay!
So I'm here.
[Giggling] The thing I love most about Rice, now that I'm here,
is the autonomy that the higher ups give the undergraduate students.
I really love the fact that they hold us to a certain expectation, not only with academics,
but also in our social lives and within our colleges.
We have our own college governments and also the drinking policy and things of that nature,
they give us responsibility and I like that they expect certain things from us and I mean,
I like being treated as an adult.
Of course, my family is like, "Oh you know, we still pay for stuff, so you're not an adult,"
but when I come to Rice campus, I get treated as an adult, and I really like that.
I'm actually the publicity coordinator this year for the Black Student Association on campus,
and well, like coming to Rice, my sister was the Vice President
of the Black Student Association last year, and through her,
I really got to know what the Black Student Association is on campus.
It's a community for people who identify with black culture and people
who want to be a part of black culture.
And I really appreciated that.
I never really invested in black culture until I got a part of the Black Student Association
and it's been such a rewarding experience.
We do volunteer activities, we do events, fundraiser events,
we did Relay for Life last year, which I had never done before and it was so much fun walking
out there with other people in other clubs and people in the community,
people part of the BSA and I absolutely loved it.
So my experience with the Black Student Association has been phenomenal,
and I really encourage people to be part of the Black Student Association.
You don't have to be black to join; a lot of people think that,
but it's for everybody and it's a lot of fun.
