Hi, my name is Maurice Kuykendoll,
and I'm a financial associate here at Prudential.
I'm sure you're wondering who these people are behind me.
- Ajinay. - Ajinay.
Oh, that's what I was going to guess,
but I just wanted to make sure
there were no, like, silent letters.
These are students here
for the Prudential Peak Leadership Conference.
Howard University.
Oh, Howard.
I went to Hampton, so I'll forgive you for that decision.
It's one of the few conferences for freshmen
and sophomores, which really stood out to begin with
when you apply for this kind of program.
Everyone's into business, finance, accounting.
Being that I'm a business major, I was really interested
in getting some type of experience.
I'm only a freshman right now, but I figure let me start
as early as I possibly can.
KUYKENDOLL: It's three days of exciting sessions.
Nishant here just got assigned a mentor.
They'll be meeting with senior executives all day,
of which I am not one.
They all sat up and fixed their posture.
MENTOR: Can we do this?
You guys hear that?
You hear that, miss?
Let's have some fun.
I have no slides!
I have ten principles I want to share with you
about building your personal brand.
Persistent, ambitious-- what do we have?
Dream-chaser, driven.
(music playing)
STUDENT: Teach us how to motivate ourselves,
get ourselves out there.
STUDENTS: The mentors were really helpful because
they came from all the areas of Prudential.
Connecting with someone in the firm, getting more inside.
It's only better if I believe it's better.
STUDENT: Very helpful in trying to look at
a different career path
that I haven't always thought about,
real estate investments through equities.
STUDENT: The mentors were super friendly.
"Call us, text us, email us, we will respond."
They really want to recruit the best talent here for Prudential.
KUYKENDOLL: Start with researching anything
and start with any crazy idea that you can come up with.
STUDENT: Banking. Retirement.
MENTOR: Oh, I really like that one.
A hedge against uncertainty.
Oh, it was really great since I've never really talked
to people from an insurance company before.
Nice to meet you.
STUDENT: Great networking and sitting next
to the chief actuary here at Prudential.
The COO was there and also the CFO.
I got to find out what some senior leaders
do in the company, but I also got to find out,
you know, a little bit about them personally
and how they interact with their coworkers.
And just having people you can count on
makes a work environment really great
and a place you want to go to every day.
This way to Pru-land, flight 1313.
Non-stop service to annuities.
MENTOR: Welcome to gate two, everyone.
Off to our first gate, I guess, for the day
to learn a little bit about the different business types
here at Prudential.
Now boarding group one with non-stop service to retirement.
It was nice getting to go to all the different departments
and hear more about it.
STUDENT: We go through with our passports.
We're going to learn more about those parts of the company.
Trail mix, okay.
Did we charge you for that?
I know exactly what teambuilding activity you're going to do.
Want to let me in on the secret?
No.
MENTOR: We're going to go over to the Norton Museum
and we're going to have a scavenger hunt.
I really like being able to meet the students here.
They came from a lot of diverse backgrounds.
I'm from St. Louis.
Nashville, Tennessee.
Brooklyn, New York.
Houston, Texas.
Guilford, Connecticut.
I'm from Los Angeles.
I live in Miami, Florida.
From New Jersey.
Minnesota.
It was our last day here and we gave presentations.
I learned a lot about myself, not only as a person,
but as a leader.
STUDENT: A really great way to get your foot in the door
is to be able to network
and to be able to really experience what the culture
is like here at Prudential.
I also grew up with Prudential,
I knew them since I was little,
they've been around for a long time.
I appreciate its values and visions.
I was in the military, I know Prudential does the SGLI
for the military.
They're doing a lot for us, it's time to give back.
Having this from Prudential
really is an amazing opportunity.
It'll make us want to work at Prudential
more than other companies that didn't think we were worth
their time when we were younger.
Give me a P-R-U!
ALL: Pru!
