(chanting) We are the brothers of the I-O-T-A
We came to step. We came to step, step.
[stepping]
Stompdown is basically a really big production that gives
different organizations such as fraternities and sororities
the opportunity to showcase their talents, and then also compete for money
that often goes to different service projects, philanthropies, as well as community service.
It's the biggest step competition in Oklahoma
and in this part of the United States.
People from Texas, Kansas, and all around come up here just to step.
We basically create the show with each other
so that that way we can own the show and each of us has a piece of it that we contributed.
For the people who are stepping, they might start practicing first semester.
Outside of school and work and other organizations that we're involved in,
it's a little bit more than twenty hours per week that we're putting into practice outside of all of that.
So we're often found scouring the halls of Dale or the basements of Adams' Tarman
trying to find, basically, practice spaces.
And we're there until 1:30 in the morning, sometimes midnight,
just depending on what time we actually start practice.
So it's a lot of hard work, but it's definitely fun,
and I personally feel like it's worth it.
[cheering]
By spending so much time together, we're able to actually get to know each other better
and we have all these inside jokes
and we just grow and have a lot of teamwork. That's my favorite part.
(performance recording) In 5-4-3-2-1
Oftentimes we get pigeonholed into the stereotype of
"all you do is step" or "all you do is stroll" because really that's all people usually see
because that's as far as they get involved.
If people were to know more about our organizations, they'd know
that we're not stepping just for the fun of it,
but really just trying to actually win the prize
to bring money back to our chapters
because we do so much work in the community.
You can see us in the Union doing booths,
community service at some of the local schools,
and just different things that we do that require funding.
This is just really a fundraiser for us.
[music and stepping]
I really think that people should go and experience it,
especially if they've never experienced anything like this before.
