Hi, I’m Bethany. In this vlog, I will talk about soda. [introduces sign for "soda"]
This vlog will explain how and why soda is bad for your health.
As you may already know, soda is terrible for your health for many different reasons.
Today we will focus on 5 reasons; obesity, type II diabetes, tooth decay,
osteoporosis (weak bones) and the fact that soda is unnatural. I will talk about each of these.
Let’s start with obesity. Did you know that people who drink soda tend to weigh more and have more fat than people who don't drink soda?
People who don't drink soda tend to weigh less and have less fat.
People who drink soda regularly tend to gain weight over time.
Does the weight gain happen quickly? No, it happens slowly.
After drinking soda for a while, you might notice that you can't button your pants, or you step on the scale and see that you've gained weight.
... and you might wonder why.
Drinking soda can cause a person to slowly gain weight and more fat.
Reason #2: Type II diabetes is an illness that tends to affect people who are overweight with a lot of body fat,
and people who don't exercise and eat junk food instead of healthy food.
Type II diabetes can also affect older people and those with a family history of diabetes, but
it tends to mostly affect people who are unhealthy, overweight, drink lots of soda and eat candy or junk food.
If you take care of your body, through exercise and eating healthy foods, and not drinking soda, the risk of type II diabetes is very low.
However, if you do not take care of your body, don't exercise or eat healthy, and you drink a lot of soda,
then you may get type II diabetes.
Reason #3: Drinking too much soda also causes tooth decay.
Tooth decay is when your teeth break and fall apart. Why does this happen?
The sugar that is found in soda can stick to your teeth and cause your teeth to erode and become weak.
Your teeth can break, chip, or fall out when you bite down on food.
Sometimes you see young children with black or yellow teeth, which can be a result of too much sugar and soda.
Reason #4: Osteoporosis. New studies show that people who drink too much soda may be at risk for osteoporosis later in life.
When a person has osteoporosis, it means that the bones are very weak. I will explain.
Think of a kitchen sponge with lots of tiny holes in it.
If you have osteoporosis, it’s like having hundreds of tiny holes in your bones, just like a sponge.
It is so important to get enough exercise, eat healthy foods, and get enough calcium to help make sure your bones are strong.
Drinking too much soda may make your bones weak and later when you are older you could get osteoporosis.
You can fall and break your hip or arm easily, because your bones are weak.
Your goal is to try to make your bones strong and healthy now!
Did you know that there is a chemical in soda called phosphoric acid?
You know the calcium you eat improves your bones and makes them strong.
Soda is the opposite. Calcium strengthens your bones, but soda can reduce calcium levels.
Your bone strength will decrease because of phosphoric acid. Drinking soda shrinks high calcium levels. This is dangerous.
Reason #5: Is soda natural? No.
You can buy all-natural soda, but the kind you typically buy in stores, such as orange, grape, or Pepsi are unnatural.
These sodas are made with artificial colors and flavors added, which are chemicals.
This means grape soda is not made with real grapes. Chemicals are added for flavor. They are not healthy.
Drinking soda means chemicals go through your body, which is unnatural and unhealthy.
Some people feel as though they are addicted to soda and can't quit. Maybe you can try diet soda.
Understand that diet soda means there is no sugar. However, diet soda is still not healthy for you. It will not improve your health.
Regular soda is worse because it is full of sugar. Diet soda is better, but it will not improve your health.
Improving your health means vitamins, like in vegetables, fruit, or whole grains. Those improve your health.
Regular and diet soda have no vitamins or calcium or iron. There is nothing in soda to improve your health.
Soda really is really only to enjoy. It wastes money and does not improve your health. Really, soda hurts your body and is not good.
