My name’s Mike Gwizdek, and I’m on the Nursing course for Mental Health. I chose
Huddersfield because when I was looking round at different Universities, this was the one
that came up for good satisfaction overall with different students, but
also it’s got a good reputation for the Nursing School. It’s got good links and
good networks, good contacts. Campus round here’s got a really nice feeling to it.
It’s nice and compact so you’re not miles away from anywhere really. It’s nice relaxing
cafes that you can eat in, even the Student Union bar is nice to chill out in. The facilities
for my course are great. There’s rooms which are set up just like a hospital ward would
be so you can get your practice skills in there.
There’s loads of books and journals you can access. The tutors have been really supportive
and any questions you’ve got to ask, they’re more than happy to answer your
questions, and they always invite any queries.
The course includes two work placements, it’s fifty per cent theory and fifty per cent practice.
You get two to three months in practice, which can be a hospital
ward, it can be in the community. You get a mentor so when you arrive in your placement,
there’s one nurse, which oversees your whole development while you’re there.
I’d definitely recommend my course to anyone who wants to do mental health nursing, you
get to do three years of things that you’re passionate about. You get hands on experience,
you get to do the job before you’re qualified and you get a degree at the end as well, which
is always good. Definitely made the right choice
to come to Huddersfield, I wouldn’t change that.
