My name’s Karen Martley, and I’m the Executive Director of Staff and Workforce Development
here at Johnson County Community College. I’ve been at the college for 17 years and
the primary thing I like about working at the college is all the professional development
opportunities we offer to our employees. We have the specific professional development
related to your job, so we ask that our employees have individual development plans on file
that allow them to work towards those goals. We also offer personal development, which
allows the employees to explore other areas that they may have an interest in that are
outside of their specific job, but maybe a job that they would like to have in the future,
or something just related to a hobby or an interest that they have outside of work, say
it would be travel or gardening. And then the last thing that I like about our professional
development is our wellness opportunities. Employees can take classes in a variety of
fitness areas, as well nutrition, cooking, or even meditation, yoga, relaxation and de-stressing
types of techniques. It is a great place to work. I left a corporate job to come to Johnson
County Community College, and it was the best career decision that I’ve ever made. I love
the working environment and the people. It’s a great place to work.
