Hi! My name is Zack Williamson and I am a photographer here at CustomMade.
This video is the first in this series, designed to help you take better product photos of your work
Good product photography is an essential part of your business
because in your shop, your work speaks for itself.
However, to a potential buyer online,
Your work is only as good as your photos.
While having expensive gear certainly helps,
you don’t have to spend a lot of money just to take great photos
Understanding the principles behind what makes a great photo,
is far more important
To highlight this,
I’m going be taking all the photos in this demo, just using the camera app on my cellphone.
The first thing we need to talk about when it comes to photography is lighting
The best light source is the sun
Try shooting in the middle of the day with a window at your back
And if there is too much light, you can hang a white sheet in front of the window,
and it will help defuse and soften the light.
Another thing to consider are the backgrounds for your photos
Simple and clean backgrounds, focus the buyers attention on what you want to feature
Rather than, distract them with clutter.
In this demo, we propped a large white piece of paper on a cardboard box to create a seamless background
However, any simple or clean backdrop such as a table , countertop, or large piece of wood can help highlight your piece.
Finally, don’t be afraid to take a lot of photos of your product
Shoot from the top, the side, move the piece around.
Shoot wide, shoot close up
Highlight the different details that you want to feature
This helps the buyers understand the piece is a whole,
but also special elements that you’ve added.
Feel free to improvise,
Something as simple as using a pencil to prop up a ring
Can give you a whole other angle that you may not have gotten otherwise
Hopefully, you found these tips helpful
But the best way to learn photography
Is to just get out there and take a lot of photos
