For a year I worked in harvesting coca, any job I could get to not waste time,
any work so that I could get paid. I didn’t say no to anything.
But we were coerced and forced to leave our fields with nothing, for over 24 hours
so they could take everything. We don’t want to support acts of terrorism.
It was then that opportunity struck. The harvesting of cocao that came with the development programs
of 1998 allowed Nicanor to realize his dreams that he had kept for over 25 years.
In 2002, he counted six acres of cocao that only gave 20% profit.
In that year, he entered the alternative development program to assist the growers of San Alejandro
that had volunteered to eradicate the illegal growing of coca.
It was here that Nicanor revealed himself to be an astute farmer with incredible scientific intuition for the growing of cacao.
The home has to be a happy place, because if a man is happy in his work then he is happy at home.
Only through this will be earnings increase, and he will work harder to increase production.
Once you have greater production, you begin to improve yourself,
you begin to improve your home, you want to live in a good house. You want to have your mobility and your tools
that allow you to work better. In this way, the planting of cacao has helped us immensely, and we are doing much better now.
When you begin, it can be hard. But soon you realize that you can do it, and that you can succeed.
You see that your hard work pays off at the moment of harvest.
I now see that you harvest is really what you sow.
