high school, summer league and even recreational level swimmers
If you want to become fast and efficient than you gotta find that catch
it is a BIG one. Let'*** the board
Now if you are new to swimming, if you really don't know what the catch is
it's extremely important to becoming a fast swimmer
Now what is the catch exactly? I'm going to draw some water here
Now when you are swimming
we'll put Dude in the water right here
That's like his head, that's his body
His arm is coming up and is about to go in the water here
with this stroke. Now his hand is just now
entering the water. Now what he's going to try to find is
a solid water mass that's under here. It's underneath the surface it's usually
not very shallow, it's going to be deeper
It's gonna be a solid water mass that he's going to try to 'catch'
'catch' get it?.... with his arm
So his arm is down here now and its gonna try to catch on to.....
'feel' a solid water mass so he can actually move himself forward
through the water. What you want to do, ideally, is find that catch on the water
and be able to accelerate your body past
that point. Almost like your hand is standing still
against that solid water mass as your body
moves forward past that point. Now it's very very important to try to find the catch
A lot of advanced swimmers, they have natural feel for feeling
that water mass down there which allows them to have a nice strong catch on
the water or a good 'feel'
for the water. Now something that
less advanced swimmers more like the high school
or summer league level swimmers something that they have trouble doing
is actually finding that catch on the water
simply because they may have less experience or
less exposure to the water throughout the year. So what you want to do
is find the catch. What you do not want to do
in high school level and summer league level swimmers
they do this a lot---they feel this mass
they feel that catch on the water but the hard part is that
accelerating your body past that point actually takes a lot of strength
and that's why a lot of times the high school level or the summer league level
swimmer when they feel that, when they feel a nice strong catch on the water
they actually slide their hand around it
There's a couple ways that they'll do that. They find as it
gets really hard
to move their body forward past this point, so what they do is they find that
catch
and then sometimes they turn their hand to the side so they can pull past it
really easily
or they'll slide past with their hand this way
The fastest swimmers are able to grab onto the water down here
or able to have a nice strong catch and they use their strength to
accelerate their body past that point
But like I said, a lot of times the high school level & summer league level
swimmers they have a little bit of a hard time having the strength or the
confidence to move themselves past it, so they slide their hand to the side
which allows them
a nice easy arm path
So they can spin their arms really quickly, but the downside of that
is that they're not really going anywhere. So if you're a swimmer
and it feels like you're swimming really really hard, you're given a lot of
effort but you're just not going anywhere
then you need to slow your arm stroke down so you can feel this water mass.
So you can feel this catch on the water
and really start to build up your stamina and your strength to be able to
accelerate past this point
It'll really help you out in the long run because in the long run you'll
become a much stronger swimmer
even though you may be slowing the arm stroke down at first and it feels like
you're going slower
If you can develop that nice catch on the water, when you can speed
that up
it'll really help you become a faster swimmer
So the catch is extremely important, don't dodge it
don't slide your hand pass that catch when you feel it
make sure you get that solid grip on the water
and you're on the right path to becoming a very fast and
efficient swimmer
