-Welcome to FC Yahoo, guys.
Christiano Ronaldo is under contract at Real Madrid until
summer 2018.
And according to several major newspapers,
Los Blancos are looking to add another two years to his
contract to the tune of nearly $24 million a year,
which might be enough to buy him some clothes.
Who knows?
That would appear to be a good deal.
He's one of the top two players in the world,
maybe even the top one, depending on who you ask.
He's adapted his style to become the very best penalty box
poacher in the world, and he's probably the greatest player
in the club's history.
But if I were in charge, I'm not sure I'd be getting ready
to sign on for another two years.
He'll be 33 when his current contract runs out and therefore
35 if they extend the deal to 2020.
Yes, he's insanely fit, but is he really going to be
at the very top level in 2020?
Or will he be playing more of a Francesco Totti style bit part
role, one that probably isn't worth $24 million a year?
Right now the Daily Mail are among those saying Paris
Saint-Germain are willing to pay 100 million euros for him,
which means Madrid could sell him on at a profit after seven
incredible seasons.
That's like selling a Toyota Corolla back to the dealer with
100,000 miles on it and getting even more money back.
It's too good a deal to miss, and it's likely his
value's going to drop significantly in the coming
years as his career reaches its conclusion.
They could sell him on to an MLS side in a few years' time,
but the depreciation curve will have hit hard.
It might seem counter-intuitive, but now really is the time
to make a deal.
He's achieved all he needs to in Spain.
He's not getting any younger.
He's picking up more niggling injuries.
He had to take to Instagram on Thursday to address that very
issue.
And politically speaking, it's a good move.
Gareth Bale is President Florentino Perez's man.
He should be the one they nurture going forward.
At the moment, it appears that most of the Madrid team
don't even like each other.
If they remove the team's biggest individual,
perhaps dressing room harmony will improve too.
So it's time for Madrid to cash in their chips.
They might not get another player who can score 60 goals
a season, but with the funds, they can strengthen the team
across the board.
You know it makes sense, right?
