(Musicians sporadically play instruments.)
A one, a two, a one, two, three... (music begins playing)
My name is Steve Wiest and I’m the director of
the One O’Clock Lab Band and coordinator of lab bands.
As part of the Homecoming celebration we in the
jazz studies division are celebrating our jazz
alumni by having a rehearsal band we call it.
Where we all get together and play through some
great music from the tradition of our
North Texas jazz catalog.
Alumni who've been in the One O'clock and other
groups who come here, love to hear the current
group and to see this great tradition continuing.
My name is Charles Hackett I started here in the summer
of 1967, majoring in music education and jazz education.
As an old timer for me it's always good to hear the
students. It's always good to hear the younger guys
playing as well as the older guys because you get to
hear different interpretations of the same music and
that's what keeps the music alive.
So alumni come back and they’ll hear current students
playing some of the music they played but it has a
really wonderful individual flavor to it. And that’s
probably the highest compliment you could give
a jazz artist, is that they have this individual sound.
And that’s what we have here at North Texas.
(Audience clapping, music quietly ends.)
