Hi sir! my name's captain Jack Sparrow, and I'm searching a fearless man to join me in
an adventure. I know sir, that is why I am here. What's your name? My name is Jean Jacques
Rousseau. Rousseau? The famous Philosopher? The one and only sir! Ok then, tell me something
about yourself mr. Rousseau. I was born in Geneva, Switzerland in the year 1712. My parents
were Isaac Rousseau (a Watch maker) and Suzanne Bernard. My mother died nine days after I
was born, so I was raised and educated by my father. Then, after my father left me when
I was a teenager, I worked as a servant, in a noble household in Turin. I moved to Paris
where I studied music and became a music teacher. In 1745 I met Thérèse Levasseur, a Barely
literature, laundry maid, who became my lover, and later my wife. Thérèse bore me one,
two, three, four, five children!, but, let's just say they where deposited at the foundling
hospital and never seen again. I wrote a lot of books, but the most important one is called
the social contract and was published in 1763. In this book, I declare that the Social Contract
is the basis of any society. I also wrote an autobiography called Confessions, which
was published in 1782. Thanks sir, but I think that's enough. Mmm... tell me so, why do you
want to join our crew. Well, basically because I'm scaping.. you know ehh the government
is looking for me, the want me dead.. because of, my books. So you're trying to scape with
the pirates Rousseau?... Ha ha.. That's just Shameful. Mmm. Hi sir.. I think some introductions
are needed. Well, my name is Thomas Hobbes. I was born the fifth April 1588, in Malmesbury,
Wiltshire, England. My father was Thomas Hobbes, and my mother, I don't really Know. In the
year 1603 I left Malmesbury in order to study Philosophy and Scholastic learning at Magdalen
Hall, Oxford. My uncle, Francis Hobbes, who was a Glover, supported my studies there.
I wrote the elements of Law, published in 1640, and my most important work is Leviathan
published in 1651. So you're not from this Century, are you? Of course not! I am from the Scientific
Revolution Century. The Sciei, Sciin, Scaia, Sciee, The what? Well, listen my friend: The
Scientific Revolution was the period of changes in though, belief, social and institutional
organisation that developed in Europe between XVI and XVII Centuries. The importance of this
relays in all the new scientific discoveries that raised during this period, like Isaac
Newton's law of Universal Gravitation or Nicholas Copernicus's Heliocentric Theory. Ok, if that
was last century then, in what period are we actually?
Well captain, thanks to this Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment was born.
This movement is characterised by intellectuals who dare to know.
Think about this: If Isaac Newton could discover the natural laws regulating the World of nature, then, by using Reason, we can find the laws that govern human society.
One example of two great enlightened minds are: my friend Diderot, and me Rousseau.
If you are a great thinker of the enlightenment like me, then you should believe that in the nature of every men we find three main causes of conflict.
First, Competition; Secondly, Shyness; Thirdly, Glory. The first makes men invade for gain.
The second for Safety, and the third for Reputation. In this state of nature, every man is enemy to every man.
I beg to differ good sir, but I must counter with a natural law theory of my own.
Do you contest that life is not nasty, brut..?
Yes, yes.. "Nasty, Brutish and Short".. We've all read your books mr. Hobbes.
Well, then. if you have read my books, please give me your concept of natural law.
of course good sir. You see. I believe that man is born truly free, but everywhere he's in chains.
People in their natural state are basically good, but their natural innocence is corrupted by the evils of society.
The men is endowed with such natural rights as life, liberty and Property.
Ah, but can't you see that such things cannot exist without a structure to support them? Without an All-Powerful Monarch, man cannot enjoy such freedoms.
I must disagree sir. Man is granted this natural rights at birth. The government exists to protect these freedoms. Society would work better if all citizens participated under a social contract, were the common good was more important than the individual.
Gentlemen! Please! Calm down!
But, your idealistic dreams are RIDICULOUS!
Well, your Theories are, if I may Quote.. "Nasty...., Brutish....., and Short"
How dare you?!
