And don’t forget, GeniusDV also offers flat rate onsite Final Cut Pro training.
Final Cut Pro X provides for several ways to change content within your project.
One of those methods is use the replace function to quickly change out shots.
Check out this short sequence of clips in this project.
So, if you decide you don’t like this shot of the kid crashing, you can easily replace
it with another clip.
Okay, first a quick side note.
To determine the duration of a clip within a project, select the clip.
Then use the keyboard shortcut control D.
The timecode window will now show the clips duration, which in this case it shows this
clip is exactly two seconds long.
Okay, so let’s replace this clip with a new clip.
To do this, navigate to the event browser and find a new clip you’d like to use in
place of your old clip.
Drag a range for the area that you’d like to use.
Notice as I drag the range for this clip, it comes out to exactly three seconds.
So now, drag the new clip onto the clip you want to replace and then let go of the mouse
button.
A contextual menu will appear with several options.
Choose the Replace option.
The clip will be replaced with the new clip.
It’s important to note since my new clip was longer, it changed the length of the overall
project.
Okay, so let’s say I’m still not happy with this clip I’ve replaced.
So, I’ll navigate back to the event browser and select a range within another clip.
Now, I’m going to pay special attention to how this clips ends at the end of the range.
Meaning, I want my new clip to end as this kid lands.
Okay watch. I’m going to drag the new clip onto the clip I want to replace.
When I let go of the mouse, I get the contextual menu again.
Notice you have options for replacing from start and replacing from end.
I’ll choose replace from End.
So, check it out, if I back up and play the project, you can see the clip ends exactly
where I wanted it to.
Also the big difference here is by using Replace from Start or Replace from end, is that the
duration of your project will not change.
Okay, there you go, you’ve should now have the basic of how the replace function works.
