>>KEN BLOCK: The idea of doing something in San Francisco has been something in my head
for a long time. But I never thought it would be possible to take parts of San Francisco
and shut it down to make one of these videos.
“Bullitt” was probably a huge influence on me, and why I really wanted to do something
in San Francisco.
It’s such an iconic film in the car industry.
Driving and cars have changed quite a lot since then, so I really wanted to go use those
roads in a way that a modern Rally driver could, and would be a lot more dramatic than
what was shot back then.
I’d say the most hair-raising moment making this Gymkhana – well there’s actually
two of them. Jumping off an uphill street into a flat street, and I can’t see the
street I’m jumping into. It’s completely blind, and I’m coming in sideways.
The other part was working with Travis Pastrana. He’s on there on a dirt bike. This was the
first time he’s been on a dirt bike since breaking his leg and ankle a year ago at X-Games.
The great thing for me with these videos is that we are mixing motor sports eye candy
with selling product. It’s just a great way that social media has come into our lives
and to be able to be used in a really fun and entertaining way, but at the end of the
day someone has to pay for the production of all this. And that’s where the product
and DC shoes comes in.
I think it’s going to be really hard to out do this one ‘though. I put my heart
and soul into making this best it could be, and I think Gymkhana 6 is going to be a challenge.
But as long as the fans keep watching and enjoying it, we’ll keep trying.
