Do authors really need
to be media ready?
My name is Jess Todtfeld, President of Success In Media.
right now you're probably thinking i'm going to say yes
and you would be right
and i will tell you why
the first
i will tell you that i am also an author
i don't just run a media training company
i offered three books this year
my most recent book became a number one best seller
from u_s_a_ today less number two wall street journal
number six on business week
so i have actually been on both sides
as an author being interviewed but also
on the other side not just as a trainer
but i was a t_v_ producer for thirteen years the national level so
do authors really need to be media ready i have several reasons
let's hear that number one
even if your book isn't done
you could already be building on media fan base
so why would you want to build the media fan base
especially if you're
book isn't even done
well the reason is
to creating a group of people who were
like you know you there's a relationship
they want something for me
and by that i mean speaking to the media
becoming an expert
becoming a go-to person
becoming somebody
others want to hear more from
so when that book does come out your ways already to take advantage of that situation
and you look better
you sound better
you have messages that you tested
on audiences
so it's a
or win-win from that perspective

how important is that the question
how important is that
to sell your book
now some of you might be thinking walk on the other sales person right
wrote a book so that i could bring my message to the world
how important is it for you to have that message reached the world
find say
you do have to
sell your book and not in some sort of pitch
person type of where
infomercial worst case scenario thought not
i'm saying that you need to have the skills
said people hear about your book insight while
that's something i want
and if you don't realize at this stage of the game which ever stage a red
whether it's before the book is out
well maybe you're watching right now and you have a book that's done you say you know what
is the one piece that i don't have ready
no matter what state you're in
you need to know about this you need to know about this component
of the media red
for me it's like
it's like you've run the marathon you think your run the marathon because you wrote this
book
turns out you'd only run the half marathon
and you could see the finish line in the distance
the finish line in the distance is speaking to the media
going out there didn't people exide about
what it is that you talk about

are those benefits well
let me ask you if you talk to a publisher
if you talk to somebody
who might give you a speaking
engagement
feel relieved look
like somebody
who they want to hear from
how valuable is that to you
is a benefit
being media ready
before your book and read
were being media ready before the today show calls and says we love it let's do something
and you're shaking your boots
and you have a practice
haven't been through alright status

publishers
having publishers
be impressed
do you think that's important to you
would be important in a meeting with the publisher
for them to say well you know what
you're the complete package
your brain
would you like to be a brand
we want to
create help you hone those skills and people ask me all the time to spend all day trying
to get people to be completely different
actually spend all day trying to
bring out the best of who you are
okay next reason

now that sounds kinda squishing

but now when you think about that for a second
what does that really mean to you what would it mean to you
if you had more exposure
what would it mean
if people saw a places
meaning and from the media
in an article
if you had a list on the web page
places that you've already appear
would it help build your brand

videos on your website
on using the power of the deal right now
because i i think it's more powerful
than words
for you to see

so i think

that's using the power of the media people actually have the opportunity now more than

as some of your first efforts or even if you've been doing it for a long time
