Welcome and congratulations on being accepted to McGill. Hopefully you've realized that
we have some information about alcohol that we want to relay to you before your first
stroll through the Milton gates onto campus goes down. For all we know, you have no intentions
of drinking alcohol while you are here and that's totally legit. Doesn't change the fact
though that alcohol is readily available in Montreal and that many people will consume
it. It will even be present at orientation events for people 18 and up. So irrespective
of your personal decisions, alcohol is a substance that you will have exposure to, either directly
or indirectly, and we want to make sure that alcohol is consumed in such a way that the potential for harm is minimized. That is something that
even non-drinkers can help with. The first thing we want to make clear is that
we are not about to advocate for a return to the era of prohibition, but on the other
hand we're not going to say that in order to get the "real university experience" you
need to consume alcohol. We're not about to say, 'Just Say No' but one of 'Just Say KNOW!"
As in, if you choose to drink, 'Know why you're drinking, know the potential consequences,
and know you're in control'.
